Innovative milliner Sarah Cant takes you step-by-step through the process of creating many types of hats. Starting with felted hats and two simple classic shapes, a cloche and a trilby, Sarah shows how to use them as the basis for creating a range of different designs just by altering the shape or width of the brim or the crown, or by using different trimmings. Next you learn how to make lightweight hats from popular types of straw like sinamay (from the banana plant) or parasisal (from the sisal plant), perfect for classic panama hats or garden party confections. The final section shows how to make fabric-based hats, using materials like velvet, tweed, or silk to create classic shapes such as a tafetta pillbox, a tweed trilby, or a stunning velvet coolie. With a final section on finishing techinques, making elegant headpieces and re-creating Sarah's trademark trimmings (incuding dyeing, shaping, arranging and attaching feathers, making fabric flowers, beaded and stitched embellishments and other trims) you will be able to finish your hat in style!

Excerpt from How to Handle Hats This book is written in such language, that the man who knows little or nothing of the hat business can thoroughly understand the terms used and instructions given; and for this reason I ask the indulgence of the experienced hatman when he reads the explanations which to his experienced knowledge may seem superfluous. The claims for this book are: First - It gives the most complete and comprehensive description of modern hat making that has ever been issued in book form; and Second - It gives more valuable points about hats; how to get the best results; how to make an old hat look like new, etc. etc. than has ever been published before. Third - Ancient History has all been left nut. It gives what the man of to-day desires to know, viz., What is doing to-day, and what to do to-morrow. Times and conditions change in this progressive century, and all methods heretofore described in various publications regarding the manufacture and making over of hats are as obsolete to-day as a wooden warship. In this little treatise I have not thought it best to use a large flow of words to describe the various operations - and by that means extend it to large proportions - but have endeavored to so condense the instruction and information given to tit the requirements of a time-saving age; at the same time not sacrificing clearness and accuracy to that of brevity. Should you desire any point explained or wish further information write the author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The 500 Hats Of Bartholomew Cubbins written by Dr. Seuss and has been published by RH Childrens Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-24 with Juvenile Fiction categories.

As topical today as when it was first published in 1938, this book tells of Bartholomew Cubbins (from Caldecott Honor winner Bartholomew and the Oobleck) and his unjust treatment at the hands of King Derwin. Each time Bartholomew attempts to obey the king’s order to take off his hat, he finds there is another hat on his head. Soon it is Bartholomew’s head that is in danger . . . of being chopped off! While The 500 Hats is one of Dr. Seuss’s earliest works, it is nevertheless totally Seussian, addressing subjects that we know the good doctor was passionate about: abuse of power (as in Yertle the Turtle), rivalry (as in The Sneetches), and of course, zany good humor!

Excerpt from Straw Hats: Their History and Manufacture It will be noticed throughout this book that the author has deviated from the dictionary methods of spelling words illustrative of the action of plait. The Oxford Dictionary reads - "Plait (pleit, ploet, plit) . . . see also plat." "Plat. To form hats, etc., is now a less usual spelling than plait." "Plat-ting, the action of plat." Nuttall gives the pronunciation of plait as plate, and that of the action word plaited as plated. In the district where the manufacture is sufficiently ancient to have established a claim to its regular pronunciation, plait, as it is invariably spelt, has always been pronounced plat, and the action words plat-ter, plat-ted, and plat-ting. That this is not a local solecism of pronunciation is proved by the renderings given under the headings plat and platting in the Oxford Dictionary, and further, a literary and ancient example can be found in " Lover's Complaint," where Shakespeare speaks of "a plat-ted hive." The author thinks it is time some definite method, in proper accord with the custom of the industry, should be adopted, and he proposes a precedent, which he claims to be well founded and sensible, viz., to continue to use the word plait (pronounced plat) as the substantive, and to establish the spelling plait-ter, plait-ted and plait-ting as designations of the action words properly interpreting the universal pronunciation.
