Non-central forces have a wide variety of applications in classical and quantum mechanics as demonstrated in this book. The author emphasizes the study of time-dependent potentials, predominantly in two dimensions, without neglecting the quite well understood time-independent case. The construction of invariants in the classical case and the study of solutions to Schrödinger's equation, as well as a detailed presentation of various mathematical techniques are of main concern to the author. The book addresses theoretical physicists and mathematicians, but it will also be useful for electrical and mechanical engineers.

At what level of physical existence does "quantum behavior" begin? How does it develop from classical mechanics? This book addresses these questions and thereby sheds light on fundamental conceptual problems of quantum mechanics. It elucidates the problem of quantum-classical correspondence by developing a procedure for quantizing stochastic systems (e.g. Brownian systems) described by Fokker-Planck equations. The logical consistency of the scheme is then verified by taking the classical limit of the equations of motion and corresponding physical quantities. Perhaps equally important, conceptual problems concerning the relationship between classical and quantum physics are identified and discussed. Graduate students and physical scientists will find this an accessible entrée to an intriguing and thorny issue at the core of modern physics.

Our DMV Seminar on 'Classical Nonintegrability, Quantum Chaos' intended to introduce students and beginning researchers to the techniques applied in nonin tegrable classical and quantum dynamics. Several of these lectures are collected in this volume. The basic phenomenon of nonlinear dynamics is mixing in phase space, lead ing to a positive dynamical entropy and a loss of information about the initial state. The nonlinear motion in phase space gives rise to a linear action on phase space functions which in the case of iterated maps is given by a so-called transfer operator. Good mixing rates lead to a spectral gap for this operator. Similar to the use made of the Riemann zeta function in the investigation of the prime numbers, dynamical zeta functions are now being applied in nonlinear dynamics. In Chapter 2 V. Baladi first introduces dynamical zeta functions and transfer operators, illustrating and motivating these notions with a simple one-dimensional dynamical system. Then she presents a commented list of useful references, helping the newcomer to enter smoothly into this fast-developing field of research. Chapter 3 on irregular scattering and Chapter 4 on quantum chaos by A. Knauf deal with solutions of the Hamilton and the Schr6dinger equation. Scatter ing by a potential force tends to be irregular if three or more scattering centres are present, and a typical phenomenon is the occurrence of a Cantor set of bounded orbits. The presence of this set influences those scattering orbits which come close.

A system of N non-relativistic classical particles interacting with pair potentials is described by a Hamiltonian of the form (0.0.1) This Hamiltonian generates a flow ¢(t) on the phase space JR3N x JR3N. An analogous system of N quantum particles is described by a Hamiltonian of the form N 1 H := -L -Llj + L \lij(Xi - Xj)' (0.0.2) j=l 2mj l$i

The structural aspects of composite quantum systems in the foundation, interpretation and application of quantum theory is an increasingly prominent topic of physics research. As an emerging field, it seeks to understand the origins of the classical world of experience from the quantum level. Quantum Structural Studies presents conceptual fundamentals and mathematical methods for investigating the structuring of quantum systems into subsystems. Split into four sections, the topics covered include the historical and philosophical aspects of quantum structures, specific interpretive approaches and ontologies, and alternative methodological approaches to quantum mechanics. Questions addressed are: Can the classically relevant degrees of freedom (such as the center of mass) be considered physically realistic, and if so, in what sense? In what sense might various emergent structures be relevant for the transition from the quantum description to the classical?Do suggested new approaches describe phenomenology and proposals for new experiments? Specialists, graduate students and researchers seeking an introduction to the field of emergent structures and new directions for research and experimentation can use this book to find up-to-date representative texts and reviews.

Recent developments in nonlinear dynamics has significantly altered our basic understanding of the foundations of classical physics. However, it is quantum mechanics, not classical mechanics, which describes the motion of the nucleons, atoms, and molecules in the microscopic world. What are then the quantum signatures of the ubiquitous chaotic behavior observed in classical physics? In answering this question one cannot avoid probing the deepest foundations connecting classical and quantum mechanics. This monograph reviews some of the most current thinkings and developments in this exciting field of physics.

This invaluable book provides an elementary description of supersymmetric quantum mechanics which complements the traditional coverage found in the existing quantum mechanics textbooks. It gives physicists a fresh outlook and new ways of handling quantum-mechanical problems, and also leads to improved approximation techniques for dealing with potentials of interest in all branches of physics. The algebraic approach to obtaining eigenstates is elegant and important, and all physicists should become familiar with this. The book has been written in such a way that it can be easily appreciated by students in advanced undergraduate quantum mechanics courses. Problems have been given at the end of each chapter, along with complete solutions to all the problems. The text also includes material of interest in current research not usually discussed in traditional courses on quantum mechanics, such as the connection between exact solutions to classical soliton problems and isospectral quantum Hamiltonians, and the relation to the inverse scattering problem.

Quantum Theory: A Treatise in Three Volumes, I: Elements focuses on the principles, methodologies, and approaches involved in quantum theory, including quantum mechanics, linear combinations, collisions, and transitions. The selection first elaborates on the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, exactly soluble bound state problems, and continuum. Discussions focus on delta function normalization, spherically symmetric potentials, rectangular potential wells, harmonic oscillators, spherically symmetrical potentials, Coulomb potential, axiomatic basis, consequences of first three postulates, and time-dependent states. The text then examines the stationary perturbation theory, variational method, and the asymptotic approximation method. Concerns cover the application of the asymptotic approximation method to potential barrier problems, method of linear combinations, lower bounds for the ground state eigenenergy, relative degeneracy, and degenerate case. The publication examines the theory of collisions and transitions, including the scattering of identical particles, Coulomb field, methods of determining scattering phases, persistent perturbations, and adiabatic approximation. The selection is a valuable source of information for researchers interested in quantum theory.
