This volume provides a contemporary account of classical theism. It features 17 original essays from leading scholars that advance the discussion of classical theism in new and interesting directions. It’s safe to say that classical theism—the view that God is simple, omniscient, and the greatest possible being—is no longer the assumed view in analytic philosophy of religion. It is often dismissed as being rooted in outdated metaphysical systems of the sort advanced by ancient and medieval philosophers. The main purpose of this volume is twofold: to provide a contemporary account of what classical theism is and to advance the scholarly discussion about classical theism. In Section I, the contributors offer a clear and cutting-edge account of the nature and existence of the God and the historical and theological foundations of classical theism. Section II contains chapters on a variety of topics, such as whether classical theism’s doctrine of simplicity needs revision, whether simplicity is compatible with the Christian doctrine of the Incarnation, and whether the hypothesis of a multiplicity of divine ideas is consistent with divine simplicity, among others. Classical Theism will appeal to scholars and advanced students in the philosophy of religion who are interested in the nature of God. Modernity has seen the rise of atheism and a rejection of classical theism. In this book, Shane Himes argues that the two realities are largely dependent on one another. Many modern Christian apologists are not fond of classical doctrines such as divine simplicity and impassibility, and thus they happily reject these ideas. The ramifications of doing so, however, have not been fully appreciated, especially as they relate to Christian arguments for God’s existence. Himes gives an overview of the arguments for God’s existence by examining the work of both scholars who reject classical theism and those who embrace it. An analysis of these arguments demonstrates that modern models of God make his existence a mere possibility as opposed to a logical necessity. As such, the arguments given by these scholars leave them susceptible to atheist critiques, given that they do not answer the question of why anything exists. Without classical theism, God becomes one possible answer as to why our particular universe exists the way that it does; but apparently this has not been convincing to many, as atheism has seen an unprecedented rise in the last two centuries. Paradoxically, if Christianity is to become dominant once again in academia and Western societies more generally, a recovery of classical depictions of God as the ground of all being is paramount.

Classical theism, the dominant tradition in Christian theology, has stressed the metaphysical concept of God, i.e., God's ontological transcendence and independence from the world. In this century, however, this concept of God has increasingly met with criticism. On the basis of the Bible and new philosophical considerations, it is argued that a relational concept of God better answers the fundamental concerns of the Christian faith. In this book the author investigates the questions of whether one can conceive of God apart from the metaphysical attributes and whether reflection on the biblical depiction of God leads necessarily to a relational concept of God. The author explores the questions by examining the relational concepts of God found in two contemporary German theologians, Jurgen Moltmann and Wolfhart Pannenberg, and uses the divine attribute of immutability as a focus for the discussion. He argues that the relational concept of God presupposes another metaphysical conception of God, which raises problems as serious as those in classical theism, and that the Bible itself, because of its nature as a narrative text, is ambiguous in many respects as far as God is concerned. A truly Christian doctrine of God must take both the metaphysical and relational aspects of God into account."
