"Classifying Christians investigates the ways in which late antique Christian heresiologists (150-450 C.E.) produced polemical ethnographies and presented their ethnographic dispositions in theological terms. The book demonstrates how the rituals, doctrines, customs, and origins of heretics functioned to map and delimit the composition of the Christian world and the world at large. Heresiology was about understanding human difference and organizing knowledge of it"--Provided by publisher.

Classifying Christians investigates late antique Christian heresiologies as ethnographies that catalogued and detailed the origins, rituals, doctrines, and customs of the heretics in explicitly polemical and theological terms. Oscillating between ancient ethnographic evidence and contemporary ethnographic writing, Todd S. Berzon argues that late antique heresiology shares an underlying logic with classical ethnography in the ancient Mediterranean world. By providing an account of heresiological writing from the second to fifth century, Classifying Christians embeds heresiology within the historical development of imperial forms of knowledge that have shaped western culture from antiquity to the present.

In recent years scholars have re-evaluated the "parting of the ways" between Judaism and Christianity, reaching new understandings of the ways shared origins gave way to two distinct and sometimes inimical religious traditions. But this has been a profoundly textual task, relying on the writings of rabbis, bishops, and other text-producing elites to map the terrain of the "parting." This book takes up the question of the divergence of Judaism and Christianity in terms of material--the stuff made, used, and left behind by the persons that lived in and between these religions as they were developing. Considering the glass, clay, stone, paint, vellum, and papyrus of ancient Jews and Christians, this book maps the "parting" in new ways, and argues for a greater role for material and materialism in our reconstructions of the past.

"Jewish-Christianity" is a contested category in current research. But for precisely this reason, it may offer a powerful lens through which to rethink the history of Jewish/Christian relations. Traditionally, Jewish-Christianity has been studied as part of the origins and early diversity of Christianity. Collecting revised versions of previously published articles together with new materials, Annette Yoshiko Reed reconsiders Jewish-Christianity in the context of Late Antiquity and in conversation with Jewish studies. She brings further attention to understudied texts and traditions from Late Antiquity that do not fit neatly into present day notions of Christianity as distinct from Judaism. In the process, she uses these materials to probe the power and limits of our modern assumptions about religion and identity.

When the founders of the early Christian Church created the Christian religion, were they able to capture the truth as found in the actual words of Jesus Christ? In looking at the history of our Christian institutions, it becomes evident that His message of love and compassion has been completely overlooked by the Christian leaders who have defined Jesus Christ. This book will be our spiritual journey to find the truth in the message of Jesus Christ. And the true message of Jesus Christ is about peace, hope and love. Sadly, His message has been ignored and distorted by our Christian institutions. The Christ message of love was given to all humanity, and we all possess the capacity to learn this message. His Gospel of love was never intended to be a collection of creeds and doctrines created by a select group of self-appointed clerical middle-men. Their creation of creeds, doctrines and dogma has resulted in division, disputation and bloodshed. This book is my effort to reveal the truth in the message of Christ, as expressed in His actual words. Because of social, political and psychological factors motivating the early Church leaders, they were unable to give us a Christian theology that reflects the real meaning of the unconditional love found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If we are to experience the truth of Jesus Christ, we must re-visit the actual words of Jesus Christ to apprehend His message of love. By eliminating the erroneous interpretations made by clerical middle-men, we can formulate our own thoughts based on the actual message of Jesus Christ. It is my sincere hope that we will make this search as though we are spiritual archeologists, digging for the truth that has remained buried under two-thousand years of obfuscation. With our new understanding of what Christ was teaching us, it will be our time to know the true meaning of Christianity. We will investigate the message of Christ by utilizing the canonical gospels to explore the words of Jesus Christ. We will also refer to other Christian Gospels that were very popular amongst the early Christians, but, due to the politics of power, these Christian Gospels were excluded from the New Testament Bible Canon. In addition to these sources, we will further explore other ancient texts that were influential within the early Christian communities such as the books found in the “Corpus Hermeticum.” Our journey will take us to unexpected and exciting insights. We will discover why our Christian institutions are failing. The truth, as expressed in the message of Christ, is to be found in the actual words of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, His truth has been lost in the creation of abstruse creeds and complicated doctrines by Church leaders. In creating their Christian theology, the early orthodox Church leaders were mainly interested in establishing and projecting their authority over all other Christian sects and political institutions. True Christianity is not about judgment and condemnation. Jesus Christ taught us that God is a loving Father and, as such, we have no reasons to fear our Father. It is our responsibility, as individuals, to discover the new reality of Christian love, and it will be our task to practice what we learn. True Christianity is universal kinship. The words of Jesus Christ, as recorded in both canonical and non-canonical sources, will be used as our spiritual road map. In the early years, after the death of Jesus Christ, men created the Christian religion, and their creation has resulted in our modern Christian institutions. Unfortunately, we have inherited “churchianity.” And true Christianity has yet to be discovered. “How the Churches Got It Wrong: Christianity Revealed” will be our spiritual journey to find the lost Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our journey back home to our spiritual Garden of Eden. It will be our journey to discover the truth about uncon

Explores how Christians created, used, and adapted religionized categories of non-Christians through the centuries Christian Imaginations of the Religious Other traces the genealogy of religionization, the various ways Christians throughout history have created a sense of religious normativity while simultaneously producing various categories of non-Christian "otherness." Covering a broad expanse of processes, practices, and socio-political contexts, this innovative volume analyzes the complex intersections of patterns of religionization in different eras while investigating their entanglements with racialization, sexualization, and ethnicization. With a readable and accessible style, Marianne Moyaert offers a nuanced and well-balanced critical analysis of how and why Christianity’s otherswere named, categorized, essentialized, and governed by those exemplifying Christian normativity in Western European society. The author takes a longue durée approach — a long-term perspective on history that extends past human memory and the archaeological record — that integrates different case studies and a variety of ecclesial, theological, and literary documents. Throughout the text, Moyaert demonstrates how religionization shaped the ways Christians classified people, organized Christian societies, interacted with different Christian and non-Christian groups, and more. Surveys the relationship between shifts in Christian normativity and the way non-Christians are imagined Helps readers connect the lasting effects of patterns of religionization with their everyday experiences Discusses the role of Christian expansion in the differential and unequal treatment of Christianity’s others Examines legal regulations and disciplinary practices that were established to define the boundaries between Christians and non-Christians Incorporates a wide range of scholarly resources, cutting-edge research, and the most recent insights and issues in the field Includes textboxes with helpful summaries, illustrations, and commentary in each chapter Christian Imaginations of the Religious Other: A History of Religionization is an excellent textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses ininterreligious studies, comparative theology, theological approaches to religious diversity, Christian-Jewish-Muslim relations, race and religion, and theorizing religion. "Professor Moyaert is one of the world’s best scholars of comparative theology. In this magisterial new work, she helps scholars of religion to better learn how religious images, whether drawn with pictures or words, are crucial to how we understand ourselves and each other." - Amir Hussain, President, American Academy of Religion "Breathtaking in scope and detail, Moyaert offers an original history of the ways Christians have projected distorted images of their religious ‘others,’ with devastating material consequences. Her illuminating story of the past is a searchlight for our present." - Jeannine Hill Fletcher, Professor of Theology, Fordham University "Christian Imaginations is a superb study of the role that Western political programs play in the historical construction of identity boundaries. Analytically erudite and socially committed, Moyaert’s book powerfully interrogates what counts as religion making this text a must-read for anyone interested in interreligious studies." - Santiago Slabodsky, Florence and Robert Kaufman Professor in Jewish Studies, Hofstra University "Raising the historical formation of religious identities to the level of contemporary treatments of gender and racialization, Christian Imaginations of the Religious Other is essential reading for students of religion." - Michelle Voss, Professor of Theology and Past Principal, Emmanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto "Crafting a Western European mosaic of religionization's turbulent history, Moyaert unveils how religious identities are constructed, hierarchies function, and their relevance for engaging diverse societies today worldwide." - Hans Gustafson, Adjunct Professor of Theology, University of St. Thomas

The sixteen chapters focus on where and how Gnostic Manichaeism interfered not only with other forms of Gnosticism, but above all with the writings and representatives of mainstream Christianity during the early centuries of our era. Key texts dealt with are a number of Nag Hammadi writings (including the Gospel of Thomas) as well as figures such as Marcion, Tatian, Ephrem the Syrian, Chrysostom, Pelagius and—not least—Augustine and his pupil Evodius.

The first three hundred years of the common era witnessed critical developments that would become foundational for Christianity itself, as well as for the societies and later history that emerged thereafter. The concept of 'ancient Christianity,' however, along with the content that the category represents, has raised much debate. This is, in part, because within this category lie multiple forms of devotion to Jesus Christ, multiple phenomena, and multiple permutations in the formative period of Christian history. Within those multiples lie numerous contests, as varieties of Christian identity laid claim to authority and authenticity in different ways. The Cambridge History of Ancient Christianity addresses these contested areas with both nuance and clarity by reviewing, synthesizing, and critically engaging recent scholarly developments. The 27 thematic chapters, specially commissioned for this volume from an international team of scholars, also offer constructive ways forward for future research.
