The research described in this thesis focuses on the production and use of additive manufactured silicate ceramic (clay) products in construction. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a technology that facilitates realising products by selective placement of material in subsequent layers. It is a technology that emerged in the 1980’s and has been adopted by many industries for prototyping and the realisation of special or individualised products, which cannot be made by use of common production processes or benefit economically by the use of AM. The research shows a broad overview of AM for clay. It describes the evolution of brickmaking, how clay building products can benefit from an AM process, which production process could meet the defined demands regarding the final product, and which characteristics the printed clay products have.

The ultimate guide to the potential of ceramic transfer printing as a creative medium. This book is aimed at those in ceramics who wish to move into print and transfers, a very exciting area which has enormous scope for creativity. Ceramic transfers or decals are one of the prime methods of decorating industrially-made ceramics. They also offer exciting creative potential for studio-based artists or designer-makers. A ceramic transfer is traditionally made by printing ceramic ink onto a special paper and allows pictures, patterns or text to be transferred onto ceramic forms - 2D and 3D. Importantly, print can achieve distinct aesthetic effects on ceramics that are not possible by using other decoration methods such as hand painting. Drawing on over twenty years of experience, Kevin Petrie offers a focused analysis of the potential of ceramic transfer printing as a creative medium. The specific materials and techniques for making versatile screen-printed ceramic transfers are explained in detail - from the 'low tech' to the more sophisticated. Other approaches by artist researchers are also brought together in this book and recent developments with digital transfers appraised. A range of case studies shows the potential and diversity of approach in this area, which extends beyond ceramics to include printing on enamel, metal and glass.

History and genealogy of eight generations of the Clay family between 1726 and 1975, particularly their family business as printers and publishers. The firm of Clays has been in Bungay for a hundred years, and for another fifty before that in various parts of London. Many, but not all, publications where under the name of the Chaucer Press. "Few, if any, human institutions spring into being without some definable origins and this is particularly true of the printing house of Clay. Its roots go deep into the history of printing technique and its own history is worthy of record because it has maintained for more than 150 years of existence the same attachment to progress with which it began. It consequently provides an intimate picture of the effects of that technical progress on a particular firm, which is sometimes more revealing than a general survey of the industry as a whole"--Front flyleaf from paper cover.
