Excerpt from Climatological Data, California, 1949, Vol. 53 During the month of January, 1949, temperatures in the State of California averaged generally much below normal with some areas reporting unprecedented periods of low temperature. The mean temperature for the State obtained by using all available records and weighting with respect to the area of the various divisions is degrees, or degrees below normal. Precipitation throughout the State was generally light with some areas reporting the greatest deficiency of record. Heaviest amounts were received in the Sierra Nevada Mountain area and portions of Southern California. The av erage precipitation for the State obtained by using all stations listed in Table 2 and weighting with respect to the area of the various divisions is inches, or inches below normal. The average total snowfall at 40 selected stations was inches, which was inches below normal. The greatest monthly precipitation was inches, at Paterson, and the least, inches at Canton. The greatest amount of precipitation in any 24 consecutive hours was inches at Long Valley on the 6th. The precipitation accumulated departure from the normal for the year 1949, to date, by sections, is: The Highlands, inches; Red Sandstone Plain, inches; Southern Interior, inches; Sea Coast, inches The average for the Highlands was inches; for the Red Sandstone Plain, inches; for the Southern Interior, inches; and for the Sea Coast, inches. Excerpt from Climatological Data, Idaho, Vol. 52: January, 1949 During most of the month Idaho's weather was dominated by high pressure systems with centers from British Columbia southeastward into Utah. At Boise, incidently, the monthly mean sea level pressure was 6 millibars above normal, As a consequence of the dominant high pressures, storm systems affecting the State were less frequent than usual for the month and their tracks were generally well south of the normal January path. The outstanding storms occurred on the lst, and on the 14th and 15th. The first, accompanying a storm front that moved from northwest to southeast across the State, brought snowfall to all of Idaho with depths ranging up to 10 inches in Fremont County and a foot or more in Shoshone County. The storm of mid - month, principally affecting south-central and southeastern areas, was associated with a low pressure center that moved northeast ward from Nevada into Wyoming. Farm work was almost wholly confined to activities necessary for survival. And rather difficult, and stockpiles of hay were diminishing rapidly. No unusual losses of livestock were reported despite the difficulties. Sunshine was plentiful with 56% of possible against a normal of 40% at Pocatello, and 69% (a new January record) against a normal of 38% at Boise.
