Infertility is a problem for the couple and evaluation of the couple is preferable in a clinic where both males and females may be seen together. The contribution to care by the urologist and the gynaecologist each with an interest in infertility is different but complementary. My appreciation of this was sharpened between 1976 and 1985 during my association with the World Health Organization's Spe cial Programme of Research Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction at the meetings of the Steering Committee of its Task Force on Infertility. The deliberations of this group were aimed at developing a protocol for investigation of the infertile couple and it became apparent to me as a gynaecologist how important is the precise characterization of the male partner's role to the formulation of the management plan for the infertile couple. To improve the quality of our evaluation of the male partner our techni cal staff were trained in the semen methodology of the laboratory of Dr F Com haire of Ghent and we were joined by Dr CLR Barratt, male reproductive biologist. It seemed appropriate to share our enthusiasm for clinical andrology, so after discussion with Dr Comhaire and Professor T Glover, an eminent male reproductive biologist, then of Brisbane, who planned a sabbatical to his native was arranged for 1 and 2 May 1986. Professor Glover en Yorkshire, a meeting of the meeting.

The decade that has passed since publication of the second edition of this textbook has not only witnessed a tremendous increase in knowledge within the ? eld of and- logy, but also seen the ? eld itself achieve a newfound status within the medical p- fession. Knowledge and status have been of mutual bene? t to the ? eld and the growing critical mass of diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities have caused andrology to be recognized as a medical subspecialty in some countries such as Germany, Poland, and Estonia. The European Academy of Andrology (EAA) served as a pacemaker for this development and continues to strive for establishment of andrology as a clinical ? eld. Well-designed curricula and qualifying examinations have contributed to the of? cial recognition of andrology as a speciality. This recognition of the ? eld helps patients with andrological problems to ? nd the specialist they seek. This textbook summarizes the current state of knowledge in the ? eld of andrology. It is a source of knowledge to all those who are or want to become andrologists. In addition, as andrology is clearly an interdisciplinary ? eld, this book may serve as a compendium and source of reference for all those physicians and biologists active in neighboring areas, who want to obtain an overview of andrology and who require information on special problems. The extensive references are timely and up to date.

Each clinical care pathway consists of an algorithm that delineates the overall structure of decision-making for each condition, describes initial clinical presentations, and guides the reader through diagnostic testing and treatment. Furthermore, the volume features annotations that develop key andrological concepts and provide explanations for each step in diagnosis and management. Designed for clarity and ease of use, Clinical Care Pathways in Andrology is a practical and valuable reference for urologists, primary care physicians, and residents who are not specialty trained in andrology.
