A review of ophthalmic pathology, aimed at students who are beginning to study the visual system and practitioners who want to distill the clinical implications from a pathologist's report. This work describes and illustrates the pathologic features of all disorders seen in ophthalmic practice, with emphasis on clinicopathologic correlations. It addresses the pharmacologic agents useful in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. Some of the topics covered in the book are the basic science of ocular pharmacology; clinical administration of ocular drugs; drugs affecting the autonomic nervous system; types of local anesthetics; review of anti-inflammatory drugs; and examination of inhibitors of aqueous formation. Other parts deal with the development of contact lens solution in clinical practice and the pharmacologic management of strabismus. These topics are followed by discussions of the legal basis of using drugs in optometry and the systemic effects of ocular drugs. The concluding part is devoted to the diseases of the optic nerve. The book can provide useful information to doctors, optometrists, pediatricians, students, and researchers.

A comprehensive understanding of diseases of the peripheral retina is essential to the general ophthalmologist as well as to the vitreoretinal surgeon. Expertise in in direct ophthalmoscopy, scleral depression, and contact lens biomicroscopy serves as a basis for observing the peripheral retina. These observations are then re corded on fundus drawing paper and the Tolentino vitreo-retinal chart. This or derly sequence of skills allows the ophthalmic surgeon to objectively diagnose and evaluate specific peripheral retinal disorders and plan for their therapeutic management. The Clinical Atlas of Peripheral Retinal Disorders is a compilation of fundus paint ings by David A. Tilden based on our observations of a large number of patients over the past 15 years. The atlas is organized along functional and anatomical lines. After a brief introduction to the clinical anatomy of the peripheral retina, the appearance of the fundus as a function of skin color and aging is presented. Many of the diseases of the peripheral retina can be divided into trophic (nutritional), tractional, and a combination of trophic plus tractional etiologies. This classifica tion system, although somewhat simplistic, appears adequate for our present level of understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of these disorders. Un doubtedly, once the molecular biology of these conditions is elucidated through future research, the classification will be revised. In addition, there are other con ditions that affect the peripheral retina that do not fit the proposed classification system and are covered under separate headings, i. e.

Ophthalmic pathology is a mainstay in ophthalmic practice. A deep understanding of ophthalmic pathology is essential to being a good clinician, since what is seen from other disease entities in ophthalmic practice is simply an interpretation of gross pathology and sometimes a microscopic evaluation of diseases. Ophthalmic pathology is usually directed to ophthalmologists by general pathologists. Ophthalmologists are not used to identifying diseases at a histopathological or cellular level. The pathogenesis of diseases is dependent on ongoing changes over time, something that is difficult to ill.
