From the bestselling author of The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise and Jane and Dan at the End of the World A “heart-wrenching and humorous” (Publishers Weekly) love story for anyone who’s ever wanted something—or someone—just out of reach, Colleen Oakley’s Close Enough to Touch is "a treat...fans of Jojo Moyes will rejoice" (Booklist). Can you miss something you never had? Jubilee Jenkins is no ordinary librarian. With a rare allergy to human touch, any skin-to-skin contact could literally kill her. But after retreating into solitude for nearly ten years, Jubilee’s decided to brave the world again, despite the risks. Armed with a pair of gloves, long sleeves, and her trusty bicycle, she finally ventures out the front door—and into her future. Eric Keegan has troubles of his own. With his daughter from a failed marriage no longer speaking to him, and his brilliant, if psychologically troubled, adopted son attempting telekinesis, Eric’s struggling to figure out how his life got so off course, and how to be the dad—and man—he wants so desperately to be. So when an encounter over the check-out desk at the local library entangles his life with that of a beautiful—albeit eccentric—woman, he finds himself wanting nothing more than to be near her. A “heart-wrenching and humorous” (Publishers Weekly) love story for anyone who’s ever wanted something—or someone—just out of reach, Colleen Oakley’s Close Enough to Touch will delight fans of Jojo Moyes’s One Plus One and Graeme Simsion’s The Rosie Project.

Fans of Louise Penny will love the Emily Kincaid mysteries by Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli! “Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli is a rather rare jewel among writers. She can make you laugh, keep you interested and make you angry with a certain character all at the same time. It is these conflicting emotions that make me return to her writing time and again.” —Goodreads, on Dead Sleeping Shaman Even the beauty of Northern Michigan can’t put a smile on the face of Emily Kincaid’s perpetually cranky friend Deputy Dolly Wakowski, and when someone tries to destroy the only family Dolly has ever had, her crankiness turns lethal, even as the crime threatens to overwhelm her. Still struggling in her career as a mystery writer, Emily takes a deep breath before stepping in to help. As they launch their search for Dolly’s assailant and the investigation deepens, two strange clues emerge: the attacker’s trademark black jellybeans and a note to Dolly reading “Thou Shalt Not Steal.” With Dolly’s disposition growing more sour by the day and Emily growing more curious, the two encounter a violent and abusive boyfriend, dig up old clues from Dolly’s painful past, and strengthen a friendship that’s as odd as it is perfect. But before Dolly and Emily can puzzle it all out, a loved one of Dolly’s will be murdered, another will be kidnapped, and a long-awaited confrontation between a mother and a daughter will heal at the very moment it kills. Labyrinths and labyrintine borders have been around for a very long time. In fact, they have been used outside of formal religion as a ritual object to express spiritual values for at least 3500 years in countries all over the world, including China, India, the Holy Land, Ireland, Southern Europe, Scandinavia, pre-Columbian America, and England. They can be found at Neolithic and Sardinian and Hopi rock art sites, in Hindu temples and Taoist shrines, bordering Minoan frescoes, and in Roman mosaics. They have been incorporated into Roman Catholic and Episcopal cathedrals, Protestant churches, and in New Age retreat centres. They have been carved into rocks, turf, and wood; engraved in metal; laid out in stones; woven in reeds; set in tiles; painted and drawn. In other words, the labyrinth is a nearly universal form and comes as close as we can to an archetype. An archetype is a symbol that appeals to us at an unconscious level. We don’t have to struggle with its meaning intellectually. Its symbolic meaning is somehow ingrained in us, part of our very nature. As a result, it may appeal to us without our even understanding why. It is always risky to talk about the meaning of such an archetypal symbol. We know that it must carry a wealth of meaning to appeal to so many different sorts of people over such a long stretch of time. But we can, tentatively, explore some of its meanings if we stay aware that we can never really plumb all of its riches.

Virtuoso written by Murray Pomerance and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-16 with Performing Arts categories.

Elizabeth Taylor's electrifying performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The milkshake scene in There Will be Blood. Leonardo DiCaprio's turn as Arnie in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? What makes these performances so special? Eloquently written and engagingly laid out, Murray Pomerance answers the tough question as to what makes an exceptional, or virtuosic performance. Pomerance intensively explores virtuosic performance in film, ranging from classical works through to contemporary production, and gives serious consideration to structural problems of dramatization and production, actorial methods and tricks, and contingencies that befall performers giving stand-out moments. Looking at more than 40 aspects of the virtuosic act, and using an approach based in careful meditation and discursion, Virtuoso moves through such themes as showing off, effacement, self-consciousness, performative collapse, spontaneity, acting as dream, acting and femininity, virtuosity and torture, secrecy, improvisation, virtuosic silence, and others; giving special attention to the labors of such figures as Fred Astaire, Johnny Depp, Marlene Dietrich, Basil Rathbone, Christopher Plummer, Leonardo DiCaprio, Alice Brady, Ethel Waters, James Mason, and dozens more. Numerous scenic virtuosities are examined in depth, from films as far-ranging as Singin' in the Rain and The Bridge on the River Kwai, and My Man Godfrey. As the first book about virtuosity in film performance, Virtuoso offers exciting new angles from which to view film both classical and contemporary.

Remembering written by John McMillan and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-22 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

John McMillan shares his life story with sincere honesty - every humourous and heartbreaking moment. He was raised on a small farm in southwestern Quebec, the only son of a fourth-generation farmer. His early memories include details, anecdotes, and experiences of family and farm life in the 1950s, including games, holiday activities, and social interactions associated with rural living. Entering his teenage years, his coming-of-age stories detail his awkwardness and amusing dating experiences. Deciding to forego becoming a farmer, John graduates from university with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As an eighteen-year-old, a chance encounter changes his life forever when he meets a sixteen-year-old girl with an infectious smile, Kathryn Magnussen. Stories of their courtship and subsequent marriage illustrate his struggle to come to terms with falling in love and validating her compatibility as a potential wife, often resulting in funny or embarrassing situations. Adjusting to married life and starting a family provides a profoundly personal, often comical look into love, relationships, and fatherhood. As their family grows, their interests expand, introducing a new dynamic. Dog training, quilting, and auction attendance are hobbies that provide amusing anecdotes and lively discussions between husband and wife. As the couple plans for retirement, they embark on a series of home renovations. The first results in mayhem, reminiscent of a comedy routine, including a plumber falling through the ceiling into the dining room and a worker taking progress payments and disappearing to Europe. John describes the effects of job demotions and company reorganizations on family life, and as retirement draws near, he is confronted with the unexpected, devastating loss of his wife. His memories provide a window into his exploits and escapades as he navigates the roller coaster ride of life, from the amusing and entertaining to the more serious and deeply moving.
