Cloud physics has achieved such a voluminous literature over the past few decades that a significant quantitative study of the entire field would prove unwieldy. This book concentrates on one major aspect: cloud microphysics, which involves the processes that lead to the formation of individual cloud and precipitation particles. Common practice has shown that one may distinguish among the following addi tional major aspects: cloud dynamics, which is concerned with the physics respon sible for the macroscopic features of clouds; cloud electricity, which deals with the electrical structure of clouds and the electrification processes of cloud and precipi tation particles; and cloud optics and radar meteorology, which describe the effects of electromagnetic waves interacting with clouds and precipitation. Another field intimately related to cloud physics is atmospheric chemistry, which involves the chemical composition ofthe atmosphere and the life cycle and characteristics of its gaseous and particulate constituents. In view of the natural interdependence of the various aspects of cloud physics, the subject of microphysics cannot be discussed very meaningfully out of context. Therefore, we have found it necessary to touch briefly upon a few simple and basic concepts of cloud dynamics and thermodynamics, and to provide an account of the major characteristics of atmospheric aerosol particles. We have also included a separate chapter on some of the effects of electric fields and charges on the precipitation-forming processes.

This book focuses specifically on bin and bulk parameterizations for the prediction of cloud and precipitation at various scales - the cloud scale, mesoscale, synoptic scale, and the global climate scale. It provides a background to the fundamental principles of parameterization physics, including processes involved in the production of clouds, ice particles, liquid water, snow aggregate, graupel and hail. It presents full derivations of the parameterizations, allowing readers to build parameterization packages, with varying levels of complexity based on information in the book. Architectures for a range of dynamical models are given, in which parameterizations form a significant tool for investigating large non-linear numerical systems. Model codes are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521883382. Written for researchers and advanced students of cloud and precipitation microphysics, this book is also a valuable reference for all atmospheric scientists involved in models of numerical weather prediction.

Some Theoretical Problems Concerning The Microphysical Processes Of Precipitation Cloud And Fog written by Koo Chen-Chao and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1968 with Cloud physics categories.

The monograph presents the results of investigations of the theoretical problems concerning the microphysics of precipitation processes, cloud, and fog. The studies, based mainly on observational data over China, involve the growth of gigantic salt nuclei and rainfall from warm clouds. The former plays an important role in the enolution of precipitation processes whereas a knowledge of the latter is much needed in theoretical investigations and the systematic description of actual conditions over China. Some articles are devoted to studies of the influence of convective bubbles on the micro-physical processes of precipitation, while others deal with problems on the second peak in the spectral profile of raindrops, which is a prominent feature in observations within clouds. Problems on the superadiabatic concentration of moisture are also treated. The analysis of the above problems will lead to a better understanding of the micro-physics of precipitation, cloud, and fog and provides useful clues for further investigations in this field. It will be helpful in problems on increasing the efficiency of artificial stimulation of precipitation. This monograph may also serve as a reference text for students and teachers in higher educational institutions.

Storm And Cloud Dynamics written by William R. Cotton and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-12-21 with Science categories.

Storm and Cloud Dynamics focuses on the dynamics of clouds and of precipitating mesoscale meteorological systems. Clouds and precipitating mesoscale systems represent some of the most important and scientifically exciting weather systems in the world. These are the systems that produce torrential rains, severe winds including downburst and tornadoes, hail, thunder and lightning, and major snow storms. Forecasting such storms represents a major challenge since they are too small to be adequately resolved by conventional observing networks and numerical prediction models. Provides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanics Describes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclones Summarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depth Integrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theory Supplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level, as well as post-graduate
