Cloud computing is an amazing resource that can provide fully managed platforms, auto-optimizing and even auto-healing operations, per-second billing, pre-trained machine learning models, and globally distributed transactional data stores. Cloud is also a critical enabler for organizations to compete in economies of speed. So, it's no surprise that most enterprises are engaging in a cloud migration or cloud transformation, as it's often called. Migrating a whole enterprise to the cloud isn't as easy as pushing a button, though. Simply lifting and shifting legacy applications is unlikely to bring the anticipated benefits whereas re-architecting applications to run optimally in the cloud can be cost prohibitive. Enterprises thus need a more nuanced strategy than simply proclaiming "cloud first!" A strategy isn't something you can copy-paste from a recipe book or from another organization. Diverse starting points, objectives, and constraints imply different choices and trade-offs. In addition, a cloud strategy doesn't just consider technical change but also includes close alignment across business, organization, and technology. Unfortunately, most books on cloud computing either stay at a very high level or are limited to specific vendors and products. This book closes this gap by questioning existing assumptions and presenting technology-neutral decision models ideally suited to defining and communicating a well-thought-out migration journey. NOTE: This book is available only as a print book on Amazon. For the DRM-free ebook in all formats and more information see CloudStrategyBook.com This book is a valuable guide and a comprehensive reference for: Enterprise architects who are tasked with defining and communicating a comprehensive and balanced cloud strategy Cloud architects who seek to understand the trade-offs embedded in cloud platform architectures IT executives who want to harvest the full benefits of cloud computing and anticipate the ramifications of product and architecture choices Business executives who are looking to align organizational changes with the technical transformation 30 chapters guide an organization along its journey to the cloud, focusing on options, decisions, and trade-offs -- the core elements of a sound strategy. Part 1: Understanding the Cloud - Cloud is very different from traditional IT procurement, so you'll have to rethink the way your IT works. Part 2: Organizing for the Cloud - Cloud impacts more than your tech landscape. Part 3: Moving to the Cloud - There are many ways to the cloud; please choose wisely. Part 4: Architecting the Cloud - Look beyond products and buzzwords and instead use rational decision models. Part 5: Building for the Cloud - The cloud is a formidable platform, but applications running on top of it need to do their part, also. Part 6: Embracing Cloud - To reap the full benefits of cloud, you need to go all in.

The current work provides CIOs, software architects, project managers, developers, and cloud strategy initiatives with a set of architectural patterns that offer nuggets of advice on how to achieve common cloud computing-related goals. The cloud computing patterns capture knowledge and experience in an abstract format that is independent of concrete vendor products. Readers are provided with a toolbox to structure cloud computing strategies and design cloud application architectures. By using this book cloud-native applications can be implemented and best suited cloud vendors and tooling for individual usage scenarios can be selected. The cloud computing patterns offer a unique blend of academic knowledge and practical experience due to the mix of authors. Academic knowledge is brought in by Christoph Fehling and Professor Dr. Frank Leymann who work on cloud research at the University of Stuttgart. Practical experience in building cloud applications, selecting cloud vendors, and designing enterprise architecture as a cloud customer is brought in by Dr. Ralph Retter who works as an IT architect at T‐Systems, Walter Schupeck, who works as a Technology Manager in the field of Enterprise Architecture at Daimler AG,and Peter Arbitter, the former head of T Systems’ cloud architecture and IT portfolio team and now working for Microsoft. Voices on Cloud Computing Patterns Cloud computing is especially beneficial for large companies such as Daimler AG. Prerequisite is a thorough analysis of its impact on the existing applications and the IT architectures. During our collaborative research with the University of Stuttgart, we identified a vendor-neutral and structured approach to describe properties of cloud offerings and requirements on cloud environments. The resulting Cloud Computing Patterns have profoundly impacted our corporate IT strategy regarding the adoption of cloud computing. They help our architects, project managers and developers in the refinement of architectural guidelines and communicate requirements to our integration partners and software suppliers. Dr. Michael Gorriz – CIO Daimler AG Ever since 2005 T-Systems has provided a flexible and reliable cloud platform with its “Dynamic Services”. Today these cloud services cover a huge variety of corporate applications, especially enterprise resource planning, business intelligence, video, voice communication, collaboration, messaging and mobility services. The book was written by senior cloud pioneers sharing their technology foresight combining essential information and practical experiences. This valuable compilation helps both practitioners and clients to really understand which new types of services are readily available, how they really work and importantly how to benefit from the cloud. Dr. Marcus Hacke – Senior Vice President, T-Systems International GmbH This book provides a conceptual framework and very timely guidance for people and organizations building applications for the cloud. Patterns are a proven approach to building robust and sustainable applications and systems. The authors adapt and extend it to cloud computing, drawing on their own experience and deep contributions to the field. Each pattern includes an extensive discussion of the state of the art, with implementation considerations and practical examples that the reader can apply to their own projects. By capturing our collective knowledge about building good cloud applications and by providing a format to integrate new insights, this book provides an important tool not just for individual practitioners and teams, but for the cloud computing community at large. Future events often occur without fanfare. Cloud computing, which sprang out of nowhere in the digital age, has quickly established itself as an industry unto itself and showed enough promise to represent the computer industry's future. The revolutionary nature of cloud computing might be attributed to the many benefits it provides. Books on this developing topic first appeared on bookstore shelves around the decade's close. There are a few books out there that you may use as references. Some of them were published with the intention of discussing theoretical considerations, while others were written with a focus on practical applications. Books written with researchers or developers in mind aren't meant for the average reader since they're tailored to a specialized audience. Cloud computing is not merely one technology, but rather a set of related technologies working together. Therefore, it is important to learn about each of these technologies separately before moving on to cloud computing. A number of books have been produced, each focusing on a different facet of cloud computing; as a result, none of them have been able to provide adequate treatment to all of the subject matter. For the benefit of new students, this book is prepared from a conceptual standpoint; it seeks to address the need for a comprehensive text that presents all the basics in an approachable way.
