This book shows their impact on Catholicism in Sweet Springs, West Virginia and far beyond Appalachia. Letitia Preston Floyd was the sister of a governor of Virginia, James Patton Preston, as well as the mother of a governor of Virginia, John Buchanan Floyd. Letitia Preston Floyd was also a Pioneer Catholic American Feminist rivaling Abigail Adams. She helped to spread Catholicism from her home "Lynnside" in Sweet Springs, through the nearby St. John's Chapel, and through connections to the Sweet Springs Resort, "Old Sweet." The author, Father Harry E. Winter, is a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate (O.M.I.), residing at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Residence, Tewksbury, Massachusetts. He serves as Coordinator for Mission, Unity, and Dialogue in the O.M.I. U.S.A. Province. He hopes this book will be the beginning of renewed interest in the importance of the Floyd and Lewis families not only on Catholicism, but on the growth of freedom of religion and democracy in our entire country.
