Strengthening Human And Societal Resilience In Uncertain Times written by Ona Rakauskiene and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-28 with Social Science categories.
The aim of this monograph is to examine the impact of a new set of uncertainties on the socio-economic situation of people and societies and to provide research-based innovative approaches and methods for building socio-economic resilience in order to reduce vulnerability and promote the resilience of people and societies to shocks. To achieve its objective, the monograph aims to reduce human and societal vulnerability and build resilience in the face of uncertainty and shocks. The authors of this monograph propose a new approach to address the problem of vulnerability not by focusing on traditional social policies but by strengthening the resilience of social groups in the face of uncertainty and shocks, by developing a strong person who a) pursues goals, who is responsible for his or her life and actively participates in shaping it, b) who can respond and adapt to stressful situations, and c) who uses the experience and resilience gained for further human development and flourishing. The proposed understanding of resilience is a relatively innovative approach to dealing with human and societal vulnerability This book is helpful for many researchers and academics dealing with related fields, policymakers on all levels, as well as practitioners and entrepreneurs. A large scientific and academic community is involved in studies of society’s resilience to various shocks, and they might be interested in new and important topics related to their work and addressed in this book.

This study provides innovative mathematical models for assessing the eruption probability and associated volcanic hazards, and applies them to the Campi Flegrei caldera in Italy. Throughout the book, significant attention is devoted to quantifying the sources of uncertainty affecting the forecast estimates. The Campi Flegrei caldera is certainly one of the world’s highest-risk volcanoes, with more than 70 eruptions over the last 15,000 years, prevalently explosive ones of varying magnitude, intensity and vent location. In the second half of the twentieth century the volcano apparently once again entered a phase of unrest that continues to the present. Hundreds of thousands of people live inside the caldera and over a million more in the nearby city of Naples, making a future eruption of Campi Flegrei an event with potentially catastrophic consequences at the national and European levels.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Scalable Uncertainty Management, SUM 2010, held in Toulouse, France, in September 2010. The 26 revised full papers presented together with the abstracts of 2 invited talks and 6 “discussant” contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 32 submissions. The papers cover all areas of managing substantial and complex kinds of uncertainty and inconsistency in data and knowledge, including applications in decision-support systems, negotiation technologies, semantic web applications, search engines, ontology systems, information retrieval, natural language processing, information extraction, image recognition, vision systems, text mining, and data mining, and consideration of issues such as provenance, trust, heterogeneity, and complexity of data and knowledge.

This volume is intended to stimulate a change in the practice of decision support, advocating an interdisciplinary approach centred on both social and natural sciences, both theory and practice. It addresses the issue of analysis and management of uncertainty and risk in decision support corresponding to the aims of Integrated Assessment. A pluralistic method is necessary to account for legitimate plural interpretations of uncertainty and multiple risk perceptions. A wide range of methods and tools is presented to contribute to adequate and effective pluralistic uncertainty management and risk analysis in decision support endeavours. Special attention is given to the development of one such approach, the Pluralistic fRamework for Integrated uncertainty Management and risk Analysis (PRIMA), of which the practical value is explored in the context of the Environmental Outlooks produced by the Dutch Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM). Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners whose work involves decision support, uncertainty management, risk analysis, environmental planning, and Integrated Assessment.

Broadening Our Knowledge On Cluster Evolution written by Dirk Fornahl and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-02 with Business & Economics categories.
Although clusters are regarded as important elements in economic development, the strong focus in the literature on the way clusters function is contrasted with a disregard for their evolutionary development: how clusters actually become clusters, how and why they decline, and how they shift into new fields and transform over time. Although recently new cluster life cycle approaches emerged, both empirical evidence and theoretical contributions on this topic are still limited. This book therefore contributes to broadening our knowledge on the life cycle and evolution of clusters both empirically and theoretically. It contains chapters on inter-firm relations as drivers of cluster transformation, as well as chapters on the heterogeneity of firms and firm capabilities during cluster evolution and on the role of institutions in stimulating the emergence and growth of clusters. Case-studies stem from different industries and technologies, such as biogas, film and television, new media and medical technologies, and from different countries, such as Sweden, Austria, Switzerland and South Korea. All chapters underline that cluster evolution does not only depend on internal dynamics, but that external relations are an integral part of cluster dynamics. This book was previously published as a special issue of European Planning Studies.

Parameter Estimation And Uncertainty Quantification In Water Resources Modeling written by Philippe Renard and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-22 with categories.
Numerical models of flow and transport processes are heavily employed in the fields of surface, soil, and groundwater hydrology. They are used to interpret field observations, analyze complex and coupled processes, or to support decision making related to large societal issues such as the water-energy nexus or sustainable water management and food production. Parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification are two key features of modern science-based predictions. When applied to water resources, these tasks must cope with many degrees of freedom and large datasets. Both are challenging and require novel theoretical and computational approaches to handle complex models with large number of unknown parameters.
