During the early 1980s, large parts of Europe were swept with riots and youth revolts. Radicalised young people occupied buildings and clashed with the police in cities such as Zurich, Berlin and Amsterdam, while in Great Britain and France, 'migrant' youths protested fiercely against their underprivileged position and police brutality. Was there a link between the youth revolts in different European cities, and if so, how were they connected and how did they influence each other? These questions are central in this volume. Varios hechos de la transición han llegado a convertirse en mitos muy extendidos. Uno de ellos es el Caso Scala, el incendio provocado en la sala de fiestas de Barcelona que en enero de 1978 provocó la muerte de cuatro personas. Con un escandaloso montaje, se intentó inculpar a las organizaciones anarquistas CNT y FAI, lo que habría provocado el hundimiento de la Confederación. Esta afirmación ha calado muy hondo entre las filas anarquistas y anarcosindicalistas, pero también en la historiografía y en el conjunto de la sociedad, hasta el punto de que todo aquel que conoce el suceso añade inmediatamente que fue el motivo por el que la CNT se vio condenada al ostracismo. El autor reivindica en este ensayo el valor de la historia frente al de la memoria, demostrando que esta versión tan arraigada de los hechos se corresponde poco con la realidad. “Este ha sido un libro muy difícil de escribir, porque rompe esquemas muy asentados. Atacar ideas previas ampliamente asumidas no resulta sencillo y no por falta de información, que hay de sobra, sino porque estas se insertan dentro de recuerdos muy personales, transmutados, pero recuerdos al fin y al cabo”.

Sin la labor sindical, política y cultural del anarcosindicalismo no es posible entender la historia reciente de España ni la de su movimiento obrero. Fundada en 1910, la CNT no solo llegó a ser el sindicato mayoritario en España, sino que contribuyó decididamente a la modernización sindical de Europa, al impulsar nuevas estrategias de lucha y formas de organización, como los sindicatos únicos y las federaciones nacionales de industria. Esta obra analiza el contexto previo a su surgimiento en el siglo XIX, con la escisión de la Primera Internacional y la importante influencia que recibió del sindicalismo revolucionario francés, hasta el final de la Guerra Civil, abordando también su devenir en los años de la dictadura franquista y la Transición. Lejos de presentar una historia lineal de sus principales hitos y acontecimientos, Julián Vadillo ha querido dar prioridad a temas menos conocidos de la CNT, como fueron los importantes debates ideológicos y organizativos que se dieron en su seno y que dan cuenta de sus oposiciones y colaboraciones con otras organizaciones sindicales y políticas, así como de su compromiso en la lucha contra la dictadura de Primo de Rivera, el auge del fascismo y el golpe de Estado del 36, dando apoyo al Gobierno de la República. De este modo, consigue también cuestionar algunos de los tópicos que han pesado en la historia del anarcosindicalismo: su desorganización, carácter insurreccional y violencia arbitraria. Como nos recuerda Vadillo, “si algo distinguió la historia de la CNT, fue su pragmatismo (acertado o no) a la hora de analizar el momento político que le tocó vivir”, dotándose desde sus inicios de estructura democrática y racional que dinamizó y modernizó el movimiento obrero.
