There is a need for a text book containing practical case studies in the subject of energy conservation and associated CO2 emission mitigation for UG & PG level engineering and science students. This book is written keeping in mind the application part of engineering knowledge and skills so that learners and practicing engineers can really apply the techniques in the field. Application of engineering principles and the methodology of integrating with practice in reducing CO2 emission are presented in this maiden edition. The first chapter provides an insight into the nexus between energy consumption and CO2 emission and the needed for mitigation. In Chapter-2 a detailed survey is presented to highlight the need of energy conservation and the achievements made. The application of numerical tools for critical analysis of energy systems to quantify energy consumption and CO2 emission mitigation potential are reviewed and presented. Detailed discussions on energy Audit, emission estimation methodology are enumerated in Chapter 3 to motivate the readers to understand and apply these strategies in the industrial environment. The cases of paper based industry, cement, spice powder and electronic contactors manufacturing industry are discussed for better understanding in chapters 4, 5, 6 & 7. In chapter 8, the application of numerical method-Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to pressure drop analysis in compressed air pipe junctions T and elbow are discussed with simulation results for energy and CO2 emission reduction. A brief introduction is presented on carbon capture in chapter 9. This book will be an eye opener for the readers looking for a career in the domain of Green Manufacturing and serve as a hand book for practicing engineers.

Global warming and its effects are felt and understood by almost every one across the globe now. Carbon footprint calculation and mitigation in different industrial sectors is the need of the hour. There are numerous industrial sectors, whose carbon footprints need to be calculated and the ways to mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions from those sectors need to be started with immediate effect. This book highlights case studies involving the carbon footprints of municipal solid waste, sustainable road transport and Carbon footprint accounting of sources and sinks by studying carbon sequestration of Karnataka, a state in India.

China’s national carbon market, the world’s largest emissions trading scheme (ETS), kicked off its first online trade recently. This can be called a milestone for the country towards the nation’s goals of having CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. China’s national ETS initially covers the power sector, before being expanded to a much broader set of energy-intensive industries. On one hand, the electricity sector, the largest carbon-emitting industry, is responsible for about 40% of China’s emissions, and it has great significance to response to global climate change. On the other hand, the effectiveness of China’s ETS will rest on how well it is coordinated with power market regulations and policies. In this regard, the deepening of reform, as well as the advanced technology and its applications in the electricity market will add new challenges and opportunities to electricity trade, which, in turn, influences national ETS. Therefore, this brings urgency to accurately capture the dynamic interactions between national ETS and electricity market to transform carbon trading into a practical and effective way to decarbonize the power sector.

The Department for Energy and Climate Change's (DECC) official CO2 figures - that count territorial emissions from power stations and transport, etc, within UK borders - show nearly 20% reduction between 1990-2009. But research commissioned for the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs reveals that CO2 emissions were 20% higher in 2009 if consumption based emissions - from imported goods - are included. The fall in territorial emissions was not mainly the consequence of the Government's climate policy. Rather it was the result of the shift in manufacturing industries away from the UK and the switch from coal to gas-fired electricity generation that began in the early 1990s. Since 1990 carbon dioxide emissions from imports have almost doubled (from 166 million tonnes (Mt) CO2 to 331 Mt CO2 in 2009). If the UK wishes to encourage emissions reductions in countries that manufacture and export goods to the UK, the MPs say the Government should recognise the growth in the UK's consumption-based emissions. Acknowledging that UK consumption is driving up territorial emissions in other countries could increase the UK's leverage over those emissions and help to secure a binding global agreement on carbon cuts. There is sufficiently robust data available to develop new policy options and identify carbon-intensive behaviours that are overlooked by concentrating on territorial emissions alone. Ministers should explore the options for incorporating consumption-based emissions data in to the policy making process and setting emissions targets on a consumption-basis at the national level.

This book looks at how digital economy can help energy businesses to meet their sustainability goals. It will further generates a new debate among policymakers about encouraging green technologies to reduce global carbon emissions. Our modern society requires a long-term, sustainable, and secure energy supply that not only generates and preserves renewable energy. It is also creating universal intelligent machines for power systems, and vital infrastructure is considered in terms of digital economy requirements. The idea of sharing information is an essential principle of sustainable thinking. In such instances, open internet and data access are required to enable any human being to acquire knowledge. Furthermore, the energy industry is changing worldwide, necessitating the consideration of potential implications and modifications. Thus, its most distinguishing feature is moving from a centrally organized system to one with many market players. Consequently, information and communication technologies and human growth have significant main and interactive effects on environmental sustainability. Simultaneously, energy industry is a major player in resolving the digital economy’s development issues.
