Coal Science, Volume 1 presents and evaluates the fundamental scientific areas involved with the structure, reactivity, and utilization of coal. This book reviews the coal's inorganic structure and reactivity and the role that ionic bonding plays in coal's chemical and physical structure and reactivity. Organized into five chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the characteristics of coals that are attributable to plastic substances. This text then examines coal's organic components that are derived from complex plant materials by complicated biological and chemical reaction processes. Other chapters consider the valuable tools in coal research, including electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance. This book discusses as well the problem of determining the molecular structure of the organic part of coal. The final chapter deals with the reductive alkylation reaction and other pertinent procedures such as reduction without alkylation and alkylation without reduction. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, engineers, and research workers.

The Science of Victorian Brown Coal provides extensive information on Victorian brown coal, which is a major fossil fuel resource by any standard and constitutes about 97% of Victoria's recoverable energy reserves. Energy from brown coal has been the mainstay of the Victorian economy, providing low-cost electricity to the state grid, briquettes as a fuel for industry and town gas prior to the discovery of natural gas. Because of the unique properties of the coal, it has been necessary to develop an in-depth scientific knowledge of the coal and its behavior, as well as innovative technologies for its effective utilization. The economic benefit brown coal has provided to Victoria is demonstrated throughout the chapters. This book aims to provide the springboard for further research and lead to a new era in the development of value-added products and the more efficient utilization of this major resource. This text is a useful reference for students or individuals conducting research on fossil fuel energy, specifically on brown coals.

Coal Science, Volume 2 presents and evaluates the fundamental scientific areas involved with the structure, reactivity, and utilization of coal. This book reviews the coal's inorganic structure and reactivity and the role that ionic bonding plays in coal's chemical and physical structure and reactivity. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the area of mineral matter in coal and a critical survey of many specific aspects that are most intriguing scientifically. This text then examines the role of the solvent in the initial stage of coal liquefaction. Other chapters consider the primary products of decomposed plant matter, which are transformed into the various ranks of coals through a series of evolutionary changes. The final chapter deals with solvent extraction, which is the most commonly used methods for studying the chemical properties of coal. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, engineers, and research workers.

This volume contains the lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute on "New Trends in Coal Science" which was held at Datca, HUgla, Turkey during August 23 - September 4, 1987. The book includes 23 chapters which were originally written for the meeting by some of the world's foremost investigators. Chemists everywhere are carrying out exciting research that has important implications for the energy and fuels industries and for society in general. For the near future, coal resources will continue to be of great importance and science and technology of the highest order are needed to extend this fossil energy resource and to utilize it in an economical way that is also environmentally acceptable. These were the main purposes for the organization of this NATO ASI. The Institute constituted two working weeks on structure and reactivity of coal and so is the book. Through the presentation of many specific recent results on structure and characterization of coal and its products the potential of new instrumental techniques is presented in the first part of the book. Finally the reactivity of coals at different conditions both in laboratory and industry is discussed. We hope that the volume will be of great use to research workers from academic and industrial background. In addition it could serve as a textbook for a graduate course on coal science and technology.

Filling the need for new and improved energy sources is an area where societal effects of science and technology will surely increase. The editors and authors have attempted in this volume to present the most current work on the science and technology of coal and coal utilization. Serious disagreement exists on several key issues such as carbon dioxide release and acid rain. At the same time, however, coal is the world's most abundant fossil fuel and will have to be used to supply the world's energy needs for the next several decades. The 1979 National Research Council Report, "En ergy in Transition: 1985-2010," has estimated that the United States alone may go from a 1979 coal consumption of 14 QUADS per annum (approximately 750 million tons per year) to approximately 40-50 QUADS per annum (approximately 2 billion tons per year) by the year 2010. If this scale of coal utilization is to become a reality, a significant level of research and development will be necessary to establish advanced process technologies and to improve related areas such as materials and instrumentation. The editors hope that this volume will allow a technically educated person to become aware of the several aspects of coal utilization, from characterization of coal itself to the processes of coal utilization.
