The author writes, "I never asked my Daddy what he did in the war. I somehow knew he would not talk about it. I was seven years old when he came home in late 1945. I knew he was gone, and now was back. My mother had dozens of letters from him, but I did not read any of them. A seven year old boy has other things on his mind." However, this question was asked by many, and answered by few. There were two reasons for this. One, what they saw and experienced in the heat of combat was so horrifying, that they were not about to share with anyone. They tried to put it behind them. The second reason was the more likely one. They did not think what they did was special.. These men, and women, were products of the Depression. They were given nothing, expected nothing, but knew how to get the job done. Every man in Mr. Carlisle's book said they did not worry about the flag, or Mom's Apple Pie. Their greatest concern was not to let their buddies down. These stories came from many different branches of the service. When the Korean War ended without victory, and was followed by Viet Nam, they were concerned that these young people had not been able to fight a war in the "proper" way; no holds barred, you are right, he is wrong, and send him to hell. After Mr. Brokaw wrote his book, they began to realize...they were special. Now, at the end, they are ready to talk. This book answers important questions that have been puzzling historians. Why did the Air Corps gunner shoot down a British Spitfire? How close was an American plane that day at Nagasaki? While floating down in his parachute, what was the airman thinking about? But those who associate the Coast Guard mainly with its peacetime functions of safeguarding Ameri can lives and property at sea and protecting legitimate ship ping along our coasts and inland waterways might wonder what the activities of the service are in time of war. For those people this book will supply the answer. An operating part of the Navy since the Presidents decla ration of a national emergency in November, 1941, the Coast Guard fought hard and effectively in the Battle of the At lantic. The loss of ships and men suffered in this battle is sad, mute evidence of the force of its fight. More heartening evidence lies at the bottom of the sea in the battered hulls of German U-boats. Again the Coast Guard has been highly valuable in land ing operations. With their traditional knowledge of the handling of small boats in all kinds of surf and under all sorts ofconditions. Coast Guardsmen were with the first Marines that landed in the Solomons and they were an equally essential factor in the success of the Navy task forces that have since effected landings in North Africa, in Sicily, 7 INTRODUCTION in Italy and in the islands of the Pacific. The story of their work in these operations is one that deserves to be told in the permanent form of a book. But there are other things than these things for which the nation at war has been dependent upon the Coast Guard. The security of our all-important ports, the protection of our thousands of miles of coast line, the manning of many of our troop transports, the rescue of mariners at sea, the test ing and regulation of lifesaving equipment aboard our mer chant ships and the maintenance of necessary aids to navi gation all these are functions and responsibilities of the Coast Guard. They are jobs that have to be done and done well, and they are eminently worth reading about. FRANK KNOX. As a boy growing up in New York City, Kevin P. Gilheany had two dreams: to join the Coast Guard, and to play the bagpipes. But by the time he finished high school he was overweight, had a drinking problem, and couldn’t swim. Undeterred by the doubts of the folks at home, he decided to enlist in the Coast Guard anyway. With great determination, and some divine intervention, he passed the swim test and graduated from boot camp, thus beginning an eventful and diverse twenty-year career in the 1980s and 1990s Coast Guard. He set a goal for himself to get command of his own patrol boat, and along the way he was involved in capturing drug smugglers, rescuing hundreds of Haitian migrants at sea, recovering Space Shuttle Challenger debris, surviving a “hooligan navy” experience on a Coast Guard workboat, coordinating search and rescue during the famed “Perfect Storm,” and leading armed boardings of ships following the terrorist attacks of 9/11. When he was asked by one of his men, who was dying from brain cancer, to play bagpipes at his retirement ceremony, Kevin started down a new path to have bagpipers officially recognized as part of the Coast Guard. A good number of Merchant Marine WW II combat veterans have poured out their memories in this book. They tell about what they did on their ships for their country to supply the needs of our fighting men and those of our allies all over the earth. We WW 2 Merchant Marines are all now in our upper 80's & 90's and dealing with medical problems. No one knows how many of us are still alive. Every day we hear that one or more of our WW II sailor comrades have "Crossed the Bar" (passed away). There have been more than 50 Merchant Marine wartime books written over the years since that war. This one may be the last and we will tell our story up to the present. Very few people have heard of these Merchant Mariners or the struggle to obtain recognition and benefits from two generations of forgetful Washington politicians. Ian Allison and this author were very close to that struggle and you can read about it here - unvarnished. We are very proud to have stories about Stanley Willner in Death's Railway and Perry Adam in Little Ships which were written by Gerald Reminick and published by the Glencannon Press, Mr. Walter Jafffe, Publisher, El Cerritto, CA. These gentlemen have wished us well with this book. The Forgotten Heroes, by the well-known author, Mr. Brian Herbert, is the third book we used for expertise on total information about the Merchant Marine. We met Mr. Herbert at the April 18, 2007 House Committee on VA Affairs. He spoke strongly about the treatment and neglect the country had given us. When his verbal time ran out, he continued with a five-page written testimony.This volume's publishing would not be possible without the collection of WW II Merchant Marine information provided by Captain Dave Swan of the St. Johns River Chapter of the AMMV from the Maritime Museum in Jacksonville, FL 32260. The subject of this book is not the U.S. in WW II. Those accounts almost never mention the Merchant Mariners. Our stories are told by these old men who were out there on every ocean before, during and after the US entered the war, 1940-1946. We most certainly acknowledge the contribution of their stories.
