Throughout Europe, fishermen have often been portrayed as a ruggedly independent and freedom-loving lot, "a race apart" working relentlessly in perilous pursuit of prey to eke out a parsimonious livelihood. For this reason, fisher folk have often been romanticized in a rather heroic fashion in novels, poetry, pictorial arts, and popular and scholarly writing as a kind of "noble savages" at home. But, both the positive and the negative views were stereotypical and based on exoticism. The imagery of fishermen as folk heroes has changed dramatically over the past few decades. They are currently under increasing scrutiny from environmentalists and public opinion for allegedly being unruly marauders of marine living resources. This volume of essays throws light on cultural dimensions of fishing and whaling in Europe and the United States. Rob van Ginkel is an anthropologist and is affiliated with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands).

This book explores the knowledge, work and life of Pacific coastal populations from the Pacific Northwest to Panama. Center stage in this volume is the knowledge people acquire on coastal and marine ecosystems. In all the complex cultural history of the islands of Britain and Ireland the idea of the coast as a significant representative space is critical. For many important artists coastal space has figured as a site from which to braid ideas of empire, nation, region, and archipelago. They have been drawn to the coast as a zone of geographical uncertainty in which the self-definitions of the nation founder; they have been drawn to it as a peripheral space of vestigial wildness, of island retreats and experimental living; as a network of diverse localities richly endowed with distinctive forms of cultural heritage; and as a dynamically interconnected ecosystem, which is at the same time the historic site of significant developments in fieldwork and natural science. This collection situates these cultures of the Atlantic edge in a series of essays that create new contexts for coastal study in literary history and criticism. The contributors frame their research in response to emerging conversations in archipelagic criticism, the blue humanities, and island studies, the essays challenging the reader to reconsider ideas of margin, periphery and exchange. These twelve case studies establish the coast as a crucial location in the imaginative history of Britain, Ireland and the north Atlantic edge. From early colonial encounters to the ecological disasters of the twenty-first century, the performativity of contact has been a crucial element in the political significance of the beach. Conceptualising the beach as a creative trope and as a socio-cultural site, as well as an aesthetically productive topography, this collection examines its multiplicity of meanings and functions as a natural environment engendering both desire and fear in the human imagination from the Victorian period to the present. The contributors examine literature, film, and art, in addition to moments of encounter and environmental crisis, to highlight the beach as a social space inspiring particular codes of behaviour and specific discourses, as a geographical frontier between land and water, as an historical site of contact and conflict, and as a vacationscape promising regeneration and withdrawal from everyday life. The diversity of the beach is reflected in the geographical range, with essays on locales and texts from Britain, Ireland, the Caribbean, South Africa, the United States, Polynesia, and New Zealand.
