Twenty Six Main Forts Of Western India Have Been Selected, Taking Into Consideration Their Strength, Location And Their Place In History And Culture. They Have Been Arranged According To Their Location-Island Forts, Coastal Forts And Inland Forts, In Each Case Starting From The North And Proceeding South. The Photographs Show The Ruins Of The One Great And Formidable Forts. This Is Due To The Ravages Of Time As Well As The Policy Of The East India Company Which Supplanted The Marathas In 1818 As The Paramount Power In India. The New Masters Of India`S Destiny Destroyed Almost Every Single Fort In Western India As They Did Not Want To Leave Any Focal Point Where Freedom Would Flourish Again. Yet These Ruins Can Transport One To Those Days Gone By And Their Pristine Glory. One Only Needs A Feel For History And Some Imagination. The Forts Are An Integral And Important Part Of Medieval History And Their Ruins Are Our Priceless Heritage, To Be Preserved And Cherisged. However, There Are So Many Forts, Big And Small, That Physical Preservation Of All Of Them Will Be Well Nigh Impossible. But They Can Certainly Be Preserved In Print In A Kind Of A Gazetteer, Which Will Have All Available Information About Their History, Location, Layout, And Other Details. Photographs Form An Important Part Of This Process And This Volume Is A Small Step In That Direction. An Introduction Takes The Readers On A Short Journey To The Forts And The Climate Of History In Which They Functioned. Each Photograph Has A Brief Text Placed Opposite, Giving Some Details About The Fort. At The Same Time It Should Be Noted That A Photograph, However Good, Cannot Be A Substitute For A Visit To The Fort. And If A Traveller Chooses His Time And Route With Care, The Ruins Will Unfold, Vividly And Tantalisingly The Ambience Of The Fort And Those By-Gone Days.

This volume examines Western India’s contributions to the spread of ideas, beliefs and other intangible ties across the Indian Ocean world. The region, particularly Gujarat and Bombay, is well-established in the Indian imaginary and in scholarship as a mercantile hub. These essays move beyond this identity to examine the region as a dynamic place of learning and a host of knowledge, tracing the flow of knowledge, aesthetic sensibilities, values, memories and genetic programs. Contributors traverse the fields of history, anthropology, agriculture, botany, medicine, sociology and more to offer path-breaking perspectives on Western India’s deep socio-cultural impact across the centuries. Western India emerges as a pivotal region in the maritime world as a transmitter of knowledge.

This book focuses on the world’s largest mangrove delta complex, located at Sundarban, a world heritage site, and on the relatively new and rapidly expanding scientific discipline of ichnology. In addition to presenting a range of ichnological research databases that are widely applicable to multidisciplinary research fields in geology, biophysics, biology, ecology, geomorphology and the marine and environmental sciences, it addresses the global concern of rising sea levels to explain growing ecological problems, from the mass mortality of coastal organisms and rapid loss of mangrove forest wealth, to widespread coastal and riverbank erosion. It also demonstrates the value of applying new ichnological tools to coastal geotechnical planning and programming, and to groundwater exploration. Thus, the book addresses a broad readership including earth scientists from various disciplines, state administrators and members of the general public.
