This report first reviews literature on the use of codes of conduct by multinational corporations in the United States as a means of promoting human rights. It then presents findings of a 1996 survey of 98 Canadian companies to ascertain whether they had codes of conduct applicable to their international activities. Results are presented & discussed with regard to how many companies had such codes, what issues the codes focussed on, whether the codes contained reference to four core labour rights, how codes were monitored & enforced, and whether businesses believed they had a role to play in promoting international human rights protection & sustainable development. Appendices include a copy of the survey questionnaire and a tabulation of responses.

Despite ongoing efforts to maintain ethical standards, highly publicized episodes of corporate misconduct occur with disturbing frequency. Firms produce defective products, release toxic substances into the environment, or permit dangerous conditions to existin their workplaces.
