Nerbo della tesi esposta nel libro è la classificazione di Gesù come un discendente della famiglia dei "Boethi", cui sarebbero appartenuti numerosi altri personaggi evangelici. Tra questi sono annoverati Nicodemo, Marta e Maria di Betania, Lazzaro, nonché la madre di Gesù, Maria I Boethus, descritta dalle fonti contemporanee ai vangeli come una delle mogli di Erode il Grande, che nel 5 a.C. sarebbe fuggita in Egitto con Giuseppe in seguito a una congiura ordita contro il re. Il libro mostra come numerose evidenze mediche e scientifiche sembrerebbero indicare che Gesù potrebbe essere sopravvissuto alla sua condanna a morte, tanto che le fonti dell'epoca ci narrano la storia di un personaggio, Gesù bar Gamala, che sembrerebbe corrispondere perfettamente al Gesù dei vangeli. La famiglia dei Boethi sembrerebbe inoltre legarsi alla dinastia oniade, cui appartenevano una classe di personaggi definiti "Giusti" e "portatori di pioggia", come Onia V Giusto e i suoi discendenti: Abba Hilkiah, Giovanni Battista, Nicodemo Boethus, Giacomo il Giusto e altri esponenti della famiglia di Gesù. Nel saggio si approfondisce l'analisi su numerosi altri argomenti, come le questioni relative all'illegittimità di Gesù e al suo stato maritale. I contenuti del libro, corredato da moltissime note, fonti e riferimenti bibliografici, sono aperti a tutti, dall'accademico al semplice curioso, ma soprattutto a chi è intenzionato a ragionare sui concetti, utilizzando il metodo scientifico e l'indagine critica come unici mezzi per giungere alla conoscenza del "Gesù della storia".

This monograph is a detailed examination of the textual characteristics and relationships of important early Greek manuscripts of the Gospel of Mark (chiefly Codex Washingtonianus [W, and also Family 13 and P45), and challenges the generally accepted view that these manuscripts are witnesses to an early stage of the Ceasarean text-type. The study begins with a discussion and critique of previous studies on the Caesarean text-type, showing the methodological weaknesses that demand a fresh analysis of the data and emphasizing the crucial importance of Codex W for the whole question of the textual history of Mark. Then a methodological approach is set forth, involving both careful quantitative measurement of manuscript agreements and detailed analysis of variants in the interest of determining both the textual relationships and textual character of manuscripts. When this more sophisticated approach is applied to the chief witnesses to the so-called "pre-Ceasarean" text of Mark, it is confirmed that W and P45 do show a significant relationship with each other and that Family 13 is a weaker member of the same group. However, the commonly held view that these witnesses reflect the early stage of the Caesarean text-type is shown to be erroneous. In addition to clarifying the textual relationships of the witnesses, the study defines more accurately their textual character, showing the scribal purposes reflected in the variants that characterize these manuscripts and adding considerably to our knowledge of the forces affecting the early transmission of the text of Mark. This is the first detailed examination of the Markan text of Codex W since the publication of the manuscript and the first published book-length study dealing with the Ceasarean text of Mark since the initial work of Kirsopp Lake and his colleagues Blake and New. This work not only addresses a major issue in the textual history of Mark, but offers methodological suggestions for the continuing investigation of the textual history of the New Testament.

"Dopo aver ricostruito in Codex Jesus, vol. I, la discendenza genealogica di Maria, madre di Gesù, in questo secondo volume gli autori si soffermano sulla figura di Giuseppe e sulle sue ombrose origini. Lo studio evidenzia come Maria, Giuseppe, Cleopa, Bartolomeo, Zebedeo, Zaccaria, Natanaele, Salome e altri personaggi neotestamentari fossero tutti presenti, o perlomeno associati, alla corte di Erode I Magno durante la congiura ordita contro il re nel 6 a.C. Questa congiura sarebbe da associare alla fuga in Egitto, narrata nel Vangelo secondo Matteo, della famiglia di Gesù, ricercata su ordine di Erode per motivi storicamente ambigui. Allo stesso episodio sarebbe da attribuire la morte del padre di Giovanni il Battista, identificabile con lo Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia, del cui omicidio parla Gesù nei vangeli. Nella ricerca viene condotta un'accurata ricostruzione genealogica della famiglia di Giuseppe e di Erode I Magno, grazie alla quale viene mostrato come le due famiglie discendessero da un antenato comune: Dositeo, un sacerdote e generale ebreo che, nella metà del II sec. a.C, aveva acquisito particolare rilevanza presso la corte tolemaica. Questa origine ebraico-egizia spiegherebbe, secondo i ricercatori, sia la fuga in Egitto sia la particolare onomastica erodiana e neotestamentaria, colma di riferimenti egizio-tolemaici. Lo studio approfondisce quindi l'analisi su Teuda I, il fratello di Giuseppe che, dopo la sua morte, sposò per levirato Maria, con la quale avrebbe generato i fratelli di Gesù menzionati nei vangeli. Oltre a Teuda I, viene fatta luce anche sull'origine di numerosi altri personaggi neotestamentari, come Gamaliele, Nicodemo, Simone, Marta e Maria di Betania, Lazzaro e Paolo di Tarso; tutti in diverso modo imparentati con Gesù. La ricerca, corredata di numerose fonti e riferimenti bibliografici, prosegue fino ad arrivare alla nascita del Cristianesimo e ai primi moti rivoluzionari".
