Difficulties with cognition are an assault on ourselves and our identities. In the context of the unpredictable and often progressive course of multiple sclerosis (MS), reductions in information processing, memory function, and other mental faculties can be a heavy burden for people with MS (PwMS). Fast Facts: Cognition in Multiple Sclerosis was written to support healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in MS clinics and other services. Each chapter is designed to be read as a standalone text. The authors aim with this book is to bring increased understanding and confidence to everyone facing the challenges of dealing with cognitive impairment linked to MS.This Fast Facts publication has been commissioned by S. A unique resource for all health care practitioners caring for people with multiple sclerosis. Endorsed by The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers Multiple sclerosis (MS), a progressive neurologic disease, is characterized by a host of physical symptoms. But the neurobehavioral consequences of MS can be as devastating and debilitating as physical symptoms, and they are often unreported and undertreated. In this new book, Dr. Anthony Feinstein, a neuropsychiatrist, documents the effects of MS on cognition, information processing speed, learning and memory, executive function, personality, mood, and behavior. Feinstein touches on a number of topics, including • the common cognitive challenges that occur with MS, such as slowed information processing speed, impaired memory, and executive function deficits • psychiatric disorders that accompany MS, such as depression and psychosis • current neuropsychological, brain MRI, and treatment data applicable to the psychiatric and cognitive disorders Mind, Mood, and Memory in Multiple Sclerosis is enhanced both by the latest science and by eloquent case histories that illustrate each cognitive and emotional disorder. Feinstein also provides recommendations for evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Written in an immediate, accessible way, this book has a crossover appeal, making it of interest not only to neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and nurses but also to people with MS and their caregivers, family, and friends.

A synthesis of current concepts about the evaluation, treatment, and future directions in MS. On the evaluation side, the authors review the use of MRI, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, functional MRI, and three-dimensional MRI, and consider the rapidly developing body of pathologic information they have yielded. On the treatment side, the focus is on recently approved medications (Novantrone), new indications for medications (CHAMPS Trial), medications in development (Oral Interferon Tau, Oral Copaxone, and Oral Cellcept), immunosuppressive therapy for both progressive disease and symptomatic therapy; the current medications for treating relapsing-remitting MS (Avonex, Betaseron, and Copaxone) are also discussed. For future directions, the authors present the current best thinking, as well as the latest discoveries in immunology relating to MS, including groundbreaking B-cell research and its applications to specific immunotherapies, and the use of immune markers for tracking the disease.

Research On Cognition Disorders written by Benito Damasceno and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-30 with Psychology categories.

Research on cognitive disorders is challenging due to the complexity of functions and numerous variables involved. The main purpose of this book is to effectively address the methodological issues and controversies in cognitive disorders research. First, it reviews the concept of human cognition as a complex activity involving interconnected mental and cerebral processes (its systemic structure), which represent the natural and social-cultural world by means of signs (its mediated, semiotic nature) and result from the internalization (or appropriation by the individual) of external actions and relations with things and persons (its cultural-historical origin). Subsequently, methodological issues are examined, including the use of the systemic and network approach in neuropsychological research, the concepts of single and double dissociation, single-case versus group studies, problems of brain-behavioral correlations using the lesion method and functional neuroimaging, the influence of task-relevant variables (confounders) related to the patient (e.g., age, education), to the lesion (size, etiology), and to the tests and testing conditions (ecological validity, examiner ́s experience). Finally, readers are given the fundamentals of statistics applied to biomedical and psychological research, with illustrative examples of how to calculate Z score, effect size, χ2 test, t test, Pearson ́s correlation coefficient, and simple linear regression. Methodological problems in current cognitive research on early multiple sclerosis, medial temporal lobe epilepsy, mild cognitive impairment and dementia are examined in detail.

Cognitive impairment and dementia afflict a large number of people worldwide, being a major source of disability and loss of income. The amount of research on this subject is extensive, covering from basic to translational and clinical aspects. Therefore, it is hard to keep up with the amount of publications and novelties in this field, especially for the busy clinician. On the other hand, basic scientists often find it difficult to explore the vast clinical literature on this matter, as well as understand the clinical features of these disorders and to define the current research needs and directions. The main aim of this Frontiers Research Topic is to provide a solid and valuable platform of scientific synthesis regarding the current knowledge and literature on this theme, including clinical features, current and emergent diagnostic strategies, management (both present and future), and other important issues pertaining to cognitive impairment and dementia.
