Up-to-date, expert new research in quantum optics and its applications Coherence and Statistics of Photons and Atoms provides cutting-edge research in modern quantum optics and complete information about systems of interacting photons and atoms based on the quantum statistical properties of such systems. Editor Jan Perina has collected eleven articles from experts around the world to illuminate the changing science of quantum optics and push the development of new, more powerful, applications such as quantum cryptography, quantum computation, and quantum teleportation. Recent articles highlight the most interesting directions in the development of contemporary quantum optics with important consequences for other physical sciences and their applications. The first chapter presents a basic analysis of quantum electrodynamics, including cavities, followed by chapters devoted to properties of photons and atoms and their interactions in quantum computers. Other articles cover these vital subjects: * Nonlinear quantum couplers * Internal correlations in optical pulses * Detection and reconstruction of quantum states from the point of view of quantum information * Quantum interference, coherence, and correlation * Quantum information and teleportation * Interaction of atoms with squeezed reservoirs * Quantum statistics and coherence of trapped atoms * Dynamics of systems of atoms Coherence and Statistics of Photons and Atoms extends earlier treatments to include up-to-date results and organizes them into a form suitable for further research in the fundamental concepts of quantum optics and in new optical applications. Comprehensive discussions of preparation, transmission, detection, and reconstruction of quantum states, as well as in-depth coverage of quantum computing, make this the most complete source of new information available to students and professionals.

Photons and Atoms Photons and Atoms: Introduction to Quantum Electrodynamics provides the necessary background to understand the various physical processes associated with photon-atom interactions. It starts with elementary quantum theory and classical electrodynamics and progresses to more advanced approaches. A critical comparison is made between these different, although equivalent, formulations of quantum electrodynamics. Using this format, the reader is offered a gradual, yet flexible introduction to quantum electrodynamics, avoiding formal discussions and excessive shortcuts. Complementing each chapter are numerous examples and exercises that can be used independently from the rest of the book to extend each chapter in many disciplines depending on the interests and needs of the reader.

The early twentieth century witnessed fundamental changes in our understanding about the nature of light and matter. This was primarily due to the inadequacy of classical physics in explaining certain physical phenomena, such as the blackbody radiation and the photoelectric effect. A major conceptual breakthrough came first in the year 1900 with Planck's hypothesis of energy quanta to account for the blackbody spectrum. The idea of the quantization of energy was then applied to radiation by Einstein in his investigation of the photoelectric effect. He considered light to be discrete, localized wave packets called "light quanta" or "photons". Several experiments that followed gave evidence to the wave-particle duality of the radiation field and matter, which culminated in the formulation of quantum mechanics. Since its inception, the field has seen tremendous progress with applications from lasers, transistors, light emitting diodes, magnetic resonance imaging to quantum computing. The invention of laser was certainly an extraordinary achievement. It revolutionized the industry and enabled access to new physical regimes of atom-light interaction. Around the same period, the optical experiments of Hanbury Brown and Twiss revealed unexpected photon correlations, demonstrating the need for quantum mechanical methods to describe the statistics of light. The availability of tunable lasers later opened up the exciting field of quantum optics. Since then many intriguing and fascinating phenomena have been predicted and observed experimentally such as squeezed states of light, photon antibunching, entanglement, trapping of atoms, optical frequency comb and quantum computation

The book gives an introduction to the field quantization (second quantization) of light and matter with applications to atomic physics. The first chapter briefly reviews the origins of special relativity and quantum mechanics and the basic notions of quantum information theory and quantum statistical mechanics. The second chapter is devoted to the second quantization of the electromagnetic field, while the third chapter shows the consequences of the light field quantization in the description of electromagnetic transitions. In the fourth chapter it is analyzed the spin of the electron, and in particular its derivation from the Dirac equation, while the fifth chapter investigates the effects of external electric and magnetic fields on the atomic spectra (Stark and Zeeman effects). The sixth chapter describes the properties of systems composed by many interacting identical particles by introducing the Hartree-Fock variational method, the density functional theory and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Finally, in the seventh chapter it is explained the second quantization of the non-relativistic matter field, i.e. the Schrodinger field, which gives a powerful tool for the investigation of many-body problems and also atomic quantum optics. At the end of each chapter there are several solved problems which can help the students to put into practice the things they learned.

A summary of the pioneering work of Glauber in the field of optical coherence phenomena and photon statistics, this book describes the fundamental ideas of modern quantum optics and photonics in a tutorial style. It is thus not only intended as a reference for researchers in the field, but also to give graduate students an insight into the basic theories of the field. Written by the Nobel Laureate himself, the concepts described in this book have formed the basis for three further Nobel Prizes in Physics within the last decade.

In last years increasing attention has been again devoted to interpretations of quantum theory. In the same time interesting quantum optical experiments have been performed using nonlinear optical processes, in particular frequency down conversion, which provided new information about nature of a photon on the basis of interference and correlation (coincidence) phenomena. Such single-photon and twin-photon effects of quantum optics provide new point of view of interpretations of quantum theory and new tests of its principles. The purpose of this book is to discuss these questions. To follow this goal we give brief reviews of principles of quantum theory and of quantum theory of measurement. As a fundamental theoretical tool the coherent state technique is adopted based on a general algebraic treatment, including the de scription of interaction of radiation and matter. Typical quantum behaviour of physical systems is exhibited by nonclassical optical phenomena, which can be examined using photon interferences and correlations. These phenomena are closely related to violation of various classical inequalities and Bell's in equalities. The most important part of this book discusses quantum optical experiments supporting quantum theory. This book may be considered as a continuation of previous monographs by one of the authors on Coherence of Light (Van Nostrand Reinhold, London 1972, second edition D. Reidel, Dordrecht 1985) and on Quantum Statistics of Linear and Nonlinear Optical Phenomena (D. Reidel, Dordrecht 1984, second edition Kluwer, Dordrecht 1991), which may serve as a preparation for reading this book.

This book discusses the interaction of light with atoms, concentrating on the semiclassical descriptions of the processes. It begins by discussing the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with a classical charged dipole oscillator. Then, in a pivotal chapter, the interaction with a free charge is described (the Compton effect); it is shown that, in order to give agreement with observation, certain quantum rules must be introduced. The book then proceeds to discuss the interaction from this point of view-light always being described classically, atoms described quantum-mechanically, with quantum rules for the interaction. Subsequent chapters deal with stimulated emission and absorption, spontaneous emission and decay, the general problem of light stimulating and being scattered from the two-state atom, the photoelectric effect, and photoelectric counting statistics. Finally the author gives a personal view on the nature of light and his own way of looking at certain paradoxes. The writing of this book was originally conceived as a collaboration between the present author and a colleague of former years, Alan V. Durrant. Indeed, some preliminary exchange of ideas took place in the mid-1970s. But the problems of joint-authorship from antipodean positions proved too difficult and the project was abandoned. I would like to record my indebted ness to him for the stimulation of this early association. I also acknowledge the encouragement of my colleagues at the Univer sity of Otago.
