In this thesis, we describe two sets of experiments using a single crystal neutron interferometer. First, we explore applications of quantum information processing (QIP) to magnetic materials characterization using polarized neutron interferometry (NI). We describe a split path spin-based interferometer geometry that uses the Bragg interferometer to separate two paths where spin states are independently manipulated. The final measurement is made on the spin degree of freedom, so we observe spin-based contrast without a need for coherence in the path degree of freedom. This is difficult to achieve in a spin-echo interferometer because the two paths overlap, with only a time delay of one relative to the other. Second, we present a design of a novel spin rotator design meeting the stringent space and temperature constraints of NI experiments. These passive devices use remnant magnetization FeCoV thin films and can be tuned to achieve arbitrary rotation of an incident neutron with known magnetization. Polarized neutron reflectometry measurements are reported for FeCoV monolayer films at thicknesses of 0.5 [mu]m and 5.3 [mu]m to characterize the depth-dependent vector magnetization in the films. Stray field near such films is characterized to determine the effect on the neighboring neutron beam path. Contrast degradation due to the rotators is also discussed. Results for a prototype set of film rotators are presented showing a spin nutation > 90° from incident orientation. An architecture is presented for which any nutation angle can be achieved by tuning the separation of two composite film structures. We also propose an experimental implementation of the deterministic quantum computation with one pure qubit (DQC1) model of quantum computation in NI. This circuit generates no entanglement, yet no efficient classical simulation is known or thought to exist. We present calculations showing a nonzero quantum discord in this implementation, as a means of quantifying other nonclassical correlations in addition to entanglement. All experiments were conducted at the Neutron Interferometer and Optics Facility at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

In this thesis, several novel techniques are proposed and demonstrated for measuring the coherent properties of materials and testing aspects of quantum information processing using a single crystal neutron interferometer. In particular we introduce methods for reciprocal space encoding of spatial information systematically in a neutron interferometer. First, a proof of principle experiment is conducted for coherent reciprocal space neutron imaging. This newly proposed technique overcomes the limitation of spacial resolution of current two dimensional neutron detectors. Second, an experiment to measure the vertical coherent length of a neutron interferometer is reported, which extends the previously achieved path separation. Third, we propose a new interferometry geometry that reduces the sensitivity of the neutron interferometer to environmental vibrational disturbances. The method is based on a quantum error compensating algorithm. Finally, a new method that is capable of measuring the autocorrelation function of a sample is proposed. This new technique can extend the capability of traditional neutron scattering experiments. All experiments are conducted at the neutron interferometry facility at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The quantum interference of de Broglie matter waves is probably one of the most startling and fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics. It continues to tax our imaginations and leads us to new experimental windows on nature. Quantum interference phenomena are vividly displayed in the wide assembly of neutron interferometry experiments, which have been carried out since the first demonstration of a perfect silicon crystal interferometer in 1974. Since the neutron experiences all four fundamental forces of nature (strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational), interferometry with neutrons provides a fertile testing ground for theory and precision measurements. Many Gedanken experiments of quantum mechanics have become real due to neutron interferometry. Quantum mechanics is a part of physics where experiment and theory are inseparably intertwined. This general theme permeates the second edition of this book. It discusses more than 40 neutron interferometry experiments along with their theoretical motivations and explanations. The basic ideas and results of interference experiments related to coherence and decoherence of matter waves and certain post-selection variations, gravitationally induced quantum phase shifts, Berry`s geometrical phases, spinor symmetry and spin superposition, and Bell's inequalities are all discussed and explained in this book. Both the scalar and vector Aharonov-Bohm topological interference effects and the neutron version of the Sagnac effect are presented in a self-contained and pedagogical way. Interferometry with perfect crystals, artificial lattices, and spin-echo systems are also topics of this book. It includes the theoretical underpinning as well as connections to other areas of experimental physics, such as quantum optics, nuclear physics, gravitation, and atom interferometry. The observed phase shifts due to the Earth's gravity and rotation indicate a close connection to relativity theory. Neutron interferometry can be considered as a central technique of quantum optics with massive particles. It has stimulated the development of interferometry with atoms, molecules and clusters. The book is written in a style that will be suitable at the senior undergraduate and beginning of graduate level. It will interest and excite many students and researchers in neutron, nuclear, quantum, gravitational, optical, and atomic physics. Lecturers teaching courses in modern physics and quantum mechanics will find a number of interesting and historic experiments they may want to include in their lectures.

This thesis describes several projects under the common theme of generating and manipulating the spatial quantum phase structure of matter and electromagnetic waves. Experiments dealing with the following topics are addressed: perfect crystal neutron interferometry, far-field phase-grating moire interferometry, orbital angular momentum (OAM), spin-orbit states, and lattices of spin-orbit states. The first focus of the thesis is describing the work related to the construction of a new beamline dedicated to quantum information related neutron interferometry experiments at the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Center for Neutron Research. This includes the development of the necessary environmental isolation, phase stability, and temperature isolation mechanisms; and the installation and optimization of spin polarization elements. The new beamline is now operational and it is currently one of only three neutron interferometry facilities in the world. The second focus of the thesis is to describe the development and characterization of far-field phase-grating moire neutron interferometry. This technique enables studies that are complimentary to those of perfect crystal neutron interferometry experiments. It may be used to probe structured materials and characterize neutron interactions with potential gradients. A two phase-grating moire neutron interferometer was developed, characterized, and optimized. This setup was then employed to probe the microstructure of a monodisperse suspension of 2 um diameter polystyrene spheres. Furthermore, a three phase-grating moire neutron interferometer was developed and characterized. This unique setup promises a wide range of impactful experiments from far-field imaging of material substructure to fundamental physics. The third focus of the thesis is to describe neutron OAM. These experiments revolve around the preparation and characterization of an azimuthally varying phase profile. The demonstration of neutron OAM using a perfect crystal neutron interferometer is described, where a spiral phase plate was used to induce OAM in one of the paths of the interferometer. Furthermore, a modified setup was used to perform neutron holography of a macroscopic object which induces an azimuthally varying phase profile. These methods provide a new tool for interferometric testing of neutron optics and the characterization of coherence of neutron beams. The last focus of the thesis is to describe matter wave and optical spin correlated OAM (spin-orbit) states. Methods to prepare neutron spin-orbit states via special geometries of magnetic fields are proposed. The preparation, entanglement characterization, and proposed experimental verification of such states are described in detail. Furthermore, a method which is capable of preparing lattices of optical and neutron spin-orbit states is introduced and described. This method utilizes novel optical and neutron devices and it is based on coherent averaging and spatial control methods borrowed from nuclear magnetic resonance. The experimental preparation and characterization of optical lattices of spin-orbit states is described in detail.

In the last twenty years polarized beams of slow neutrons have been used effectively in fundamental research in nuclear physics. Parity violation in nuclear fission and neutron optics was discoverd as well as the nuclear precession of neutrons and the coherent interference of spin channels in neutron capture by nuclei. Furthermore, these methods helped to understand better the neutron`s electric dipole moment and its beta decay. This book gives a thorough introduction to these experimental methods including the most recent techniques of generating and analyzing polarized neutral beams. It clearly shows the close relationship between elementary particle physics and nuclear physics, in particular in the section dealing with the effects caused by weak interactions. Special attention is paid to experiments which investigate the violation of quantum mechanical conservation laws. The book not only addresses specialists but also those interested in the foundations of elementary particle and nuclear physics. It is well suited as additional reading for students.

This monograph is devoted to the creation of a comprehensive formalism for quantitative description of polarized modes’ linear interaction in modern single-mode optic fibers. The theory of random connections between polarized modes, developed in the monograph, allows calculations of the zero shift deviations for a fiber ring interferometer. The monograph addresses also the Sagnac effect and the Thomas precession. Devices such as gyroscopes, used in navigation and flight control, work based on this technology. Given the ever increasing market for navigation and air traffic, researchers and practitioners in research and industry need a fundamental and sound understanding of the principles. This work presents the underlying physical foundations.
