A strong rural arts project should be collaborative. Collaborative projects accommodate diverse needs and agendas, develop non-school project advocates, are sustained by and rely on several sources, and strengthen communities. Because local artists are accessible, have a special commitment to improving education in their communities, and understand community traditions, they should be involved in collaborative art endeavors. This handbook presents models and suggestions for creating collaborative local art education programs. The book's nine chapters each suggest a stage in the creative process. Guide Sheets throughout, summarize useful information. Chapter 1 lays out the organization of the book and provides a brief word glossary. Chapter 2 gives practical suggestions, with examples, about gathering ideas and people together. Chapter 3 indicates a number of ways to gather personal and institutional support and build a project network. Chapter 4 offers suggestions for an effective and inclusive process for planning and management. Chapter 5 explains that outcomes define what will happen as a result of the project. Some outcomes are clearly measurable, others will be harder to assess. Both types are important. Chapter 6 discusses budgeting and financing. Chapter 7 describes nine management procedures which can ensure a "Positive Experience." Chapter 8 deals with the ongoing processes of project management. Chapter 9 focuses on approaches to sharing the success of the project with students, parents, project planners, community members, and the general public. Each chapter concludes with brief recommendations for reading the chapter topic in greater detail. (MM)

Community Murals As Processes Of Collaborative Engagement written by Elody Gyekis and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Community arts projects categories.

This thesis uses three community mural projects--two in inner-city Harrisburg and the Valley Roots Community Mural project in Millheim, Centre County--to analyze the impacts of collaborative community art. Contemporary technologies and materials that maximized collaborative community engagement were utilized in the mural-making processes. Local residents provided the visions for the themes and guided the designs, filled in the paint-by-number panels of the murals, helped to install the murals, and celebrated the unveiling. Community meetings, painting sessions, and unveiling ceremonies for these projects became opportunities for intergenerational and cross- cultural dialogue and relationship building. I discuss responses to the projects and analyze of community feedback in relation to an in-depth literature review of public art projects and related topics in the arts, communication, and social sciences. My analysis of formal and informal participant feedback and media coverage reveals three categories in which the mural project was highly successful for those who were engaged in it: the generation of social capital, the creation of amenities, and personal inspiration. The completed murals are lasting public art pieces--visual tributes to a collaborative community vision and each community's pride in the diverse physical and cultural aspects of its location and history.

This book is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of Community-Based Art Education (CBAE). CBAE encourages learners to make connections between their art education in a classroom setting and its application in the community beyond school, with demonstrable examples of how the arts impact responsible citizenship. Written by and for visual art educators, this resource offers guidance on how to thoughtfully and successfully execute CBAE in the pre-K–12 classroom and with adult learners, taking a broad view towards intergenerational art learning. Chapters include vignettes, exemplars of practice, curriculum examples that incorporate the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards, and research frameworks for developing, implementing, and assessing CBAE projects. “This is the book I have been waiting for—carefully researched, thought-provoking, and inspiring.” —Lily Yeh, Barefoot Artists Inc. “A practical guide for community-based art education that is theoretically grounded in social justice. Insightful suggestions for working with communities, planning, creating transformative learning, and evaluating outcomes are based in the authors’ deep experience. This book is a timely and welcome volume that will be indispensable to individuals and community organizations working in the arts for positive change.” —Elizabeth Garber, professor emeritus, University of Arizona

This case study immersed the researcher in the lives of ten members of the Amani community located in Meru, Kenya for the duration of a month, during which she examined how dialogue and collaborative art making foster understanding of peace. In addition to examining literature on community-based art education, collaboration, dialogue, and developing perspectives of peace, the researcher conducted a collaborative art workshop centered on the theme of peace with nine adolescents. Through dialogue with the adolescents and the founder of the Amani community, Dr. Karambu, several themes relating to peace were generated, along with a “toolbox” with instruments art educators may utilize when facilitating community engagement.

This article provides a new perspective on collaborative art as a transformational force to strengthen community and enhance well-being. We outline a best practices-based framework to foster community-based, collaborative art such as cocreated community murals. Specifically, we identify a strategic and successive process for collaborative art initiatives by integrating the academic literature on art, aesthetics, community, and consumer research together with the practices of arts organizations working to transform communities through participatory, cocreated art.The article highlights the contributions of this work to academic research, public policy, and community organizing efforts and outlines questions to encourage more researchers and practitioners to investigate the dynamics of collaborative art to transform communities.

This research focused on exploring how site-specific art collaboration can facilitate experiences of syncretism to challenge taken-for-granted relationships within place. A collaborative creative process through participative art-making was developed in order to respond: as artists, advocates, and learners, what do we miss when we become isolated from the synergies of community life? How can we raise our awareness/response about limiting complexities at the intersection of the communities and places we live in? Why and how can we create alternative forms of dialogue and interaction between different ways of seeing, making and acting in order to expand our own experience of the world? This research was developed in Bucaramanga, Colombia at Matamba Cubunaue, the arts organization that I co-founded in 2017, through the design and execution of Inhabited Landscape, a curatorial and educational project partially financed by the Colombian Ministry of Culture. A trimester program consisting of three collective exhibitions, two meeting/walk/workshop sessions per week, and complementary activities offered to a local audience supported the creation of site-specific art collaborations. More than 50 participants including local and international artists, institutional associates and community members ranging between 8 and 80 years of age shared their experiences about the different ways they inhabit and share public space. This transgenerational dialogue about the complexities of the collective "dasein" (being there) was analyzed through data that included documentation of artworks, audio recordings of conversations that took place throughout the making sessions and interviews. Here I participated as an artist as well as an advocate and learner. I was able to develop this research thanks to the synergies of interdisciplinary teamwork. This activist research, by facilitating something seemingly simple as people meeting each other, revealed a significant phenomenon that enhanced productive spectator/participant dialogues creating knowledge such as self-awareness and a sense of interdependence in place. A certain level of equity developed among participants what consequently demanded larger efforts and resources in order to sustain a collaborative mode of action that attempts to generate an alterity beyond the limits of the specific project. It also echoed our call to review core values regarding Matamba's organizational culture as we continue to propel the creative industries of the city. Conclusions from this research could respond to a methodological approach towards collectivism and entrepreneurship or a reference of new institutionalism in a rather unheard-of site. Collaborative artmaking that employs strategies of critical pedagogy enables communities to engage emancipation. Re-placing meaning in the `chaotic order ́ of daily time and space can help us to transgress boundaries that may be actively limiting our perception, therefore our relationship, with(in) the world.
