Plural expressions found in natural languages allow us to talk about many objects simultaneously. Plural logic -- a logical system that takes plurals at face value -- has seen a surge of interest in recent years. This book explores its broader significance for philosophy, logic, and linguistics. What can plural logic do for us? Are the bold claims made on its behalf correct? After introducing plural logic and its main applications, the book provides a systematic analysis of the relation between this logic and other theoretical frameworks such as set theory, mereology, higher-order logic, and modal logic. The applications of plural logic rely on two assumptions, namely that this logic is ontologically innocent and has great expressive power. These assumptions are shown to be problematic. The result is a more nuanced picture of plural logic's applications than has been given thus far. Questions about the correct logic of plurals play a central role in the final chapters, where traditional plural logic is rejected in favor of a “critical” alternative. The most striking feature of this alternative is that there is no universal plurality. This leads to a novel approach to the relation between the many and the one. In particular, critical plural logic paves the way for an account of sets capable of solving the set-theoretic paradoxes.

Does a novel focus on one life or many? Alex Woloch uses this simple question to develop a powerful new theory of the realist novel, based on how narratives distribute limited attention among a crowded field of characters. His argument has important implications for both literary studies and narrative theory. Characterization has long been a troubled and neglected problem within literary theory. Through close readings of such novels as Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, and Le Père Goriot, Woloch demonstrates that the representation of any character takes place within a shifting field of narrative attention and obscurity. Each individual--whether the central figure or a radically subordinated one--emerges as a character only through his or her distinct and contingent space within the narrative as a whole. The "character-space," as Woloch defines it, marks the dramatic interaction between an implied person and his or her delimited position within a narrative structure. The organization of, and clashes between, many character-spaces within a single narrative totality is essential to the novel's very achievement and concerns, striking at issues central to narrative poetics, the aesthetics of realism, and the dynamics of literary representation. Woloch's discussion of character-space allows for a different history of the novel and a new definition of characterization itself. By making the implied person indispensable to our understanding of literary form, this book offers a forward-looking avenue for contemporary narrative theory.

There are no last of their kind or secret select few with incredible powers; all the planet's people share these enhancements to their biology and are limited only by their interests and creativity. The problem that occurs is when one of the planet's citizens decides that despite all they have seen in the universe, their planet should develop weapons for defense against the potential unknowns. This proposal is met with staunch opposition, as it's believed that any space travelers that can approach from beyond what they've explored should have similar advances brought about by similar peace. The unlikelihood of a battle negates the need for weapons, something never necessary in this world. With a small contingent of like-minded developers who hear his idea and concur, the weapons are built, regardless of its unpopularity, on another planet in their solar system. His intuition is correct, as their world is approached by a hostile invading force. A war ensues, and the entire planet unifies in support of the defense efforts, the first battle of any kind this world will ever know. After a lopsided victory via superior technology, the world celebrates a new hero, but the battle changes his outlook on the entirety of the universe. He now knows there are multitudes of peaceful worlds that may face hostile invasion from the unknown depths of space. With global support, he embarks upon a mission to travel throughout the universe in search of hostile worlds that exhibit the potential to leave their atmosphere, accompanied by their savagery. His mission spreads carnage upon those planets he deems hostile, to prevent the potential attacks against peaceful worlds that are found and preserved. He comes in conflict with his daughter, who is born and raised during his travels, and later his son, born after his daughter's defiance, after they are exposed to and horrified by their father's mission to ensure peace in the universe.

How God relates to the world lies at the heart of the most intense debates in modern theology and philosophy. Movements of Nouvelle Théologie, process theology, radical orthodoxy, modern Trinitarian theology and postmodern theology (i.e. Jean-Luc Marion) all seek to reconsider God’s relation to the world as a corrective of what they perceive as problematic. Of particular significance is the recent revival of the theology of participation, as promoted by Radical Orthodoxy in UK and Hans Boersma in North America. Facing excessive secularism and fragmentation of the modern Western world, Radical Orthodoxy and Boersma resort to the pre-modern theology of participation as the way forward. Relying heavily on Platonism, however, their participatory theology, as critics pointed out, tends to compromise the intrinsic goodness of the creation. In this book, Ge proposes that a distinctively Christian theology of participation anchored in creatio ex nihilo, developed by Augustine and brought to the fore by Aquinas, provides a more promising solution which not only secures the unity of things in God but also the goodness of creaturely plurality. Since participation in its origin is a solution to the problem of the One and the Many, Ge employs Gunton’s framework of the one and the many in his discussion of Augustine and Aquinas’s theologies of participation. By reshaping their concepts of participation in the light of the doctrine of creation, Ge argues, these thinkers have profoundly transformed the metaphysics of participation, making it finally more suitable for describing the unique relationship between God’s unity and creaturely plurality. This Christian metaphysics of participation is not only an advance on Radical Orthodoxy and Boersma, but also superior to competing theories of reality such as pluralism and reductionist physicalism. The book will also bring out implications for modern science-religion dialogues, the core of which concerns how God relates to the world.
