Early childhood is a time of wonder, excitement, adventure and learning. A time to experience social relations and friendships, and all of the emotions involved. The joy, and the excitement – of creating a common world with friends. A world of ‘what if’ and ‘as if’ moments that are accepted and built together, or rejected – leading to frustration, sadness and exclusion – the darker side of friendship. In this book, cultural-historical concepts are used to analyse the everyday lives of children. Inspired by contemporary ideas about moral imagination, Collaborative Pathways to Friendship in Early Childhood theorises friendship as a concept. Traditionally, studies about friendship in early childhood focus on relations built in educational settings. As a point of difference, Dr Adams and Dr Quinones introduce the conditions that are created for, with, and by young children as they move between everyday family life, and transition into education settings. Through narratives of internationally mobile families moving into Malaysia and established families in Mexico, varying perspectives of children, parents, teachers and principals are presented — culminating in a holistic understanding of friendship in early childhood. Providing insight into varied perspectives and processes involved when young children enter into friendships, this book will be of interest to researchers, post graduate students and teacher educators specialising in early childhood education, child psychology or social work.

Through its revised and applied Aristotelianism, this book illuminates our understanding of friendship in moral philosophy, moral psychology, and moral education. Friendship for Virtue has four main aims. The first is to give the virtue of friendship the pride of place it deserves in contemporary Aristotle-inspired virtue ethics. The second is to integrate Aristotelian theory with recent social scientific research on friendship through mutual adjustments. The third is to retrieve Aristotelian friendship as a moral educational concept, where 'friendship for virtue' is to be understood as 'friendship for virtue development'. The fourth is to offer a more detailed and realistic account than Aristotle did of why even the best of friendships can go stale and dissolve and why the human relationships they represent are so precarious - for example in circumstances where erotic love and friendship clash.

Meeting a key need for qualitative researchers, this practical book presents tools for creating productive partnerships and managing each phase of a collaborative project. The authors provide guidelines for working across disciplines, status differentials (such as professor and student), and geographical locations. Collaboration within particular qualitative traditions--cross-cultural research, duoethnography, participatory action research, arts-based collaborations, and others--is described and illustrated with exemplars of published studies. Readers learn how to build research teams, formulate research questions, gather and analyze data, and assess how collaborations are working. Ethical questions are highlighted throughout: Who owns collaborative research? Who decides what aspects of the findings should be disseminated? How can inequitable power relations be redressed? Within-chapter "Pedagogical Pathways" sections provide practice exercises and opportunities for reflection. Honorable Mention, ICQI Outstanding Qualitative Book Award

Young children's collaborative play is a little-researched and poorly understood area of childhood education. This solidly research-based book throws new light on a fascinating world of children's play and relationships in early childhood settings. A key feature of the book is the weight given to children's voices through the use of in-depth accounts of actual collaborative play episodes in two distinctive early childhood settings. The detailed, full field notes provide a substantial body of evidence of a little known area of children's lives in early childhood settings, allowing the reader to become a participant in the children's play.

This book is about creating an environment, experiences, interactions, and relationships that allow children (birth to age 5) in center-based and family child care programs to have authentic experiences that will promote their development and learning. To address planning and practice the authors zero in on knowing and respecting the individual child, the group, and working in partnership with families. Rather than focusing on educational activities per se, the emphasis is on paying attention to the childs whole experience in the program. The authors examine what you need to know about children and their families, how to translate that information into plans and experiences, and how to include parents in the process. The authors wrote this book to be a collaborative encounter with readers.
