Investigates attitudes toward and relationships with the Indian Union from those in frontier states, who at times rose up in opposition from centralized Indian powers. This book delves into the status of three regions: Kashmir, Sikkim, and the province of Assam in 1947. In Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah had emerged as a charismatic leader before it was raided by Pakistan. It explores how Sikkim was accorded the status of an India-protectorate stage in 1950. The Naga National Council, led by Z.A. Phizo, resorted to armed uprisings in the 1950s in Naga Hills, followed by M.N.F. and Laldenga thereafter. The work sheds light on the dynamics of collaboration and rebellion involving leaders like Sheikh Abdullah and the last King of Sikkim, P.T. Namgyal, with the Indian establishment, and why and how they rebelled against them. Additionally, it discusses consequences of these tribal leaders' armed insurrections, and the role in the formation of Nagaland and Mizoram am Indian states. Awadhesh Coomar Sinha is an anthropologist and sociologist. Clientelism and Implementing Social Security Programmes in Post-conflict Iraqi Kurdistan Region investigates social policy in a politically less-developed entity, and examines the mainstream top-down and bottom-up models of policy implementation in light of a detailed study of the Kurdistan Regional Government. In addition, it introduces the innovative “clientelistic model of policy implementation”, a political and preferential tool which utilises a public/nationalistic dichotomy in social welfare provision. The book argues that politicians in the Kurdistan region deal with social policy programmes according to their political preferences, attaching importance to policies on the basis of the way they feel about those social programmes and interest groups concerned. As such, as it stands, policy implementation is subject to interference by politicians and high government officials under the pretext of supporting and monitoring the way such policy is implemented. Through an investigation of the most prominent actors in the implementation of social security programmes, this book demonstrates how beneficiaries of these programmes can themselves become focal points in the implementation process. Indeed, within the Kurdistan Regional Government’s social policy context today, the benefits of social security schemes are being distributed based on the socio-political status of recipients, not on their socio-economic conditions and needs.

Since the start of the Anglo-Boer War today 120 years ago thousands of publications, written or typed reports and other creations have been produced to narrate the war events, express opinions on its origins, causes, course, results and legacy and on participants in the struggle. This process is ongoing, since the debate amongst both professional historians and interested amateurs on exactly what happened and why is still raging and new information on the war still crops up. The history of the Anglo-Boer War is truly a neverending discourse. As the author of a number of books on the war, I have consulted hundreds of both published and unpublished sources. Some were of limited value, but a small percentage of the published books were of such high value that they formed part of a small stack of books that found a permanent home on my desktop while I was in the writing process. Pieter Cloete’s The Anglo-Boer War – A Chronology, both the original English version and the enlarged Afrikaans version published in 2010, was always part of that stack. It is to me a privilege to write a foreword for the user-friendly and meticulously researched book. It not only contains a wealth of information but a detailed source list and an extensive index.
