Excerpt from Collected Papers on Acoustics On the one hand we have the problem (reverberation) which we have been discussing up to the present moment, and on the other the whole Question of the transmission of sound from one room to another, through the walls, the doors, the ceiling and the floors; and the telephonic transmission, if I may so call it, through the length of the structure. It is five years ago since this second problem was first attacked and though the research is certainly not complete, some ground has been covered. A quantitatively exact method has been established and the transmission of sound through about twenty different kinds of partitions has been determined. For example: Transmission of sound through four kinds of doors has been studied; two of oak, two of pine, one of each kind was paneled and was relatively thin and light; one of each kind was very heavy, nearly four centimetres thick; through four kinds of windows, one of plate glass one with common panes, one double with an air space of two centimetres between, one with small panes set in lead such as one sees in churches; through brick walls with plaster on both sides; through walls of tile similarly plastered; through walls of a character not common in France and which we call gypsum block; through plaster on lath; through about ten different kinds of sound insulators, patented, and sold in quantities representing hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, yet practically without value, since one can easily converse through six thicknesses of these substances and talk in a low tone through three, while a single thickness is that ordinarily employed. The behavior of an air space has been studied, the effect of the thickness of this air space, and the result of filling the space with sand, saw-dust and asbestos. In spite of all this, the research is far from complete and many other forms of construction must be investigated before it will be possible to publish the results; these determinations must be made with the greatest exactness as very important interests are involved. Excerpt from Acoustics in Relation to Architecture and Building: The Laws of Sound as Applied to the Arrangement of Buildings This manual does not profess to furnish the reader with either facts or principles previously unknown. It has simply been framed with a wish to afford, in a somewhat connected form, as much information relative to the laws of sound and their application to the arrangement of buildings as could be collected from trustworthy sources. Even to accomplish tins much, however, it was necessary to institute a wide search; for this, the most practical application of the science of Acoustics, is a subject confessedly obscure, and has been but little studied. The very names of the few authors who have written upon it were not extensively known, and much that seemed to bear upon the subject had to be procured rather from the personal testimony of those practically acquainted with buildings, than from books. It became, therefore, necessary to trespass largely on the kindness of professional and scientific men; and the Author has much pleasure in acknowledging the assistance he has received from many sources. Architectural Acoustics written by Christopher N. Brooks and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-16 with Music categories.

Acoustics as a branch of physics involves heavy mathematics, and the practice of architectural acoustics involves knowledge of a broad range of subjects. For these reasons, many people believe that good acoustics are almost impossible to obtain and exist only in concert halls. With a solid understanding of the basics, however, rooms with good acoustics are not as hard to design and build as people might think. This work describes acoustics and the factors to be considered in constructing a room or building with good sound quality. Among the topics covered are intonation, tuning and temperaments of classical music, environmental noise, noise and vibration control, sound measurement, sound systems, acoustic models, and acoustical design for various settings and purposes, including acoustics for chamber music, synagogues, churches, and classrooms. The work looks at places like Clemens Theatre, Congress Hall, Binns Rehearsal Room, and Philharmonic Hall, to name just a few, as models of small and large buildings with excellent acoustics. Many diagrams and other illustrations enhance the text.

Sound Insulation written by Carl Hopkins and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-23 with Science categories.

Sound insulation is an important aspect of building performance. This book is a comprehensive guide to sound and vibration theory and its application to the measurement and prediction of sound insulation in buildings. It enables the reader to tackle a wide range of issues relating to sound insulation during the design and construction stages of a building, and to solve problems in existing buildings. The book has been written for engineers, consultants, building designers, students in acoustics, researchers and those involved in the manufacture and design of building products. Key aspects are that it: * Explains the fundamental theory using examples that show its direct application to buildings * Guides the reader through the links between measurement and theory * Explains concepts that are important for the application, interpretation and understanding of guidance documents, test reports, product data sheets, published papers, regulations and Standards * Makes direct reference to ISO and EN Standards on sound insulation * Contains a large number of illustrations showing measurements, predictions and example calculations for quick reference Carl Hopkins previously worked on building acoustics and environmental noise at the Building Research Establishment. During this time he was involved with sound insulation in research, consultancy, standardization, and building regulations as well as being an advisor on acoustics to government departments. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool within the Acoustics Research Unit of the School of Architecture.

Building Acoustics And Vibration written by Osama A B Hassan and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-24 with Architecture categories.

As a comprehensive reference dedicated to sound and vibration in buildings, Building Acoustics and Vibration addresses the basic and advanced principles that can be used to solve practical and theoretical problems typically encountered in building and architectural acoustic practices. In addition, physical and mathematical concepts are introduced and developed sufficiently to make this publication a self-contained and up-to-date source of information for readers. Building Acoustics and Vibration is a must-have textbook for engineering students, engineers, and consultants involved in the sound, vibrations and building environment. With comprehensibility and versatility in the presentation of knowledge, this highly anticipated publication will easily fill the gap in the literature of building engineering and sciences, which presently lacks an authoritative guide on the theoretical and practical aspects of building acoustics and vibration.
