Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Tauchnitz Edition, Vol. 1 of 2: Vol; 1448, Manual of English Literature Language The reader will do well to keep in mind, or under his eye, the four following Schemes, or Synoptical Views, according to which the history of the English Language in its entire extent may be methodized: - 1. Original, Pure, Simple, or First English (commonly called Saxon, or Anglo-Saxon); Synthetic, or Inflectional, in its Grammar, and Homogeneous in its Vocabulary; 2. Broken, or Second English (commonly called Semi-Saxon), - from soon after the middle of the eleventh century to about the middle of the thirteenth - when its ancient Grammatical System had been destroyed, and it had been converted from an Inflectional into a Non-Inflectional and Analytic language, by the first action upon it of the Norman Conquest; 3. Mixed, or Compound, or Composite, or Third English, - since the middle of the thirteenth century - about which date its Vocabulary also began to be changed by the combination of its original Gothic with a French (Romance or Neo-Latin) element, under the second action upon it of the Norman Conquest. Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1 of 2: Tauchnitz Edition Carlingford is, as is well known, essentially a quiet place. There is no trade in the town, properly so called. To be sure, there are two or three small counting-houses at the other end of George Street, in that ambitions pile called Gresham Chambers; but the owners of these places of business live, as a general rule, in villas, either detached or semi-detached, in the North-end, the new quarter, which, as everybody knows, is a region totally unrepresented in society. In Carlingford proper there is no trade, no manufactures, no anything in particular, except very pleasant parties and a superior class of people – a very superior class of people, indeed, to anything one expects to meet with in a country town, which is not even a county town, nor the seat of any particular interest. It is the boast of the place that it has no particular interest – not even a public school: for no reason in the world but because they like it, have so many nice people collected together in those pretty houses in Grange Lane – which is, of course, a very much higher tribute to the town than if any special inducement had led them there. But in every community some centre of life is necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1: Tauchnitz Edition I published three papers on Goethe in the Contemporary Review for 1884. These are now with the kind consent of the Editor re-printed. They have been carefully revised throughout, have received large alterations and. especially in the latter part, considerable additions. The number of persons among us who are called upon to devote some time to the study of Goethe's writings must be large, for it includes in the first place all who desire to acquire a knowledge of modern literature, and in the second place all those who desire to master the German language. Excerpt from The Bell of St. Paul's, Vol. 1 of 2 The lodgers, then, being such as these, came to the bare room because it was cheap and warm. Here there was every night a great fire built up - one that would last from midnight until six in the morning: they had, therefore, warmth. A jet of gas was also burning all night, so that the people had light. The lodgers dropped in one after the other and lay down; soon they grew warm: perhaps they were hungry - well, no great matter, better a hundred nights without supper than one in the cold. The air of the room presently became so foul that it might have reminded the historical student (if any were present) of N ewgate, Ludgate, or the Compter in the old days. They cared nothing for the foul air they were warm. The walls streamed: the floor was hard: the place was crammed: their companions were as wretched as themselves: - but they were warm. In the morning they would have to get up and go out and face the cold again: meantime, they were warm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Alma: Or, the Story of a Little Music Mistress I need not say these people were of the rich and prosperous class in Coppersmith. But there never yet was weather bad enough to keep at home those who must work for their daily bread, - that 'strong incentive to all exertion, which is so relentless in its claims, and cannot be set aside. The rich corn merchant, Mr. Barker, would have told you that he worked for his daily bread, when he rolled Off in his comfortable carriage to his Office that morning, bowing his head as he faced the driving rain between the steps of his own door and the steps of the carriage. His near neighbour in Cornwall Square, Dr. Law, would also tell you he worked for his living, - which, indeed, was true, - as he shut the door of his shabby brougham, and set off on a round amongst his patients - an ever-increasing number, swelled by the prolonged rainy season. He had to work hard - of that there could be no question, - for he had growing girls and boys, of all ages, to feed, clothe, and educate. And he often asked his wife, in that hopeless fashion which expects no answer, how was it all to be done? Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1 of 2: Tauchnitz Edition, Memories and Studies of War and Peace Here you and I are, said Skobelefi' with a laugh, like Uriah the Hittite, right in the forefront of the battle; and how strange it is that quiet stay-at-home folk all over the world, who take their morning papers just as they do their breakfasts, know ever so much more about this war as a whole than we fellows do, who are actually listening to the whistle of the bullets and the crash of the shells! Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1: Tauchnitz Edition; Loys, Lord Berresford and Other Tales Sir John Blake is the lord and master of Vesey Court; and Vesey Court itself is one of the most picturesquely beautiful places in the whole of our broad England. Sir John is one of the finest, freshest, most hot-tempered, and most forgiving old gentlemen in Christendom. Not so very old, either, in spite of his sixty years, being hale and hearty, with sufficient pluck and energy for half a dozen men, and having good spirits enough and as much true Irish blood in his veins as is calculated to keep him young for full ten years to come - to say nothing of the incessant turmoils in which he finds himself perpetually immersed through the machinations of his only daughter, the reigning tyrant. Excerpt from Collections of British Authors Tauchnitz Edition, Vol. 255 of 1: Euthanasia; Or, Turf, Tent and Tomb "We made mistakes in youth, my lad, But they will not outlive us; The worst we did was none so bad, The world may well forgive us." Renell Rodd. "Five to one bar one! five to one bar one! eight to one bar two! any price some of these others!" These are the sounds which rise in a discordant chorus from the pandemonium of Tattersall's enclosure at Ascot on a hot afternoon in June - now rising to the pitch of an almost unintelligible roar, then again dying away to a comparative lull, sufficient only to give a short rest to the hardened lungs of the perspiring occupants of the "Ring." "What are they making favourite, O'Connor?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
