Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1 of 2: Tauchnitz Edition Carlingford is, as is well known, essentially a quiet place. There is no trade in the town, properly so called. To be sure, there are two or three small counting-houses at the other end of George Street, in that ambitions pile called Gresham Chambers; but the owners of these places of business live, as a general rule, in villas, either detached or semi-detached, in the North-end, the new quarter, which, as everybody knows, is a region totally unrepresented in society. In Carlingford proper there is no trade, no manufactures, no anything in particular, except very pleasant parties and a superior class of people – a very superior class of people, indeed, to anything one expects to meet with in a country town, which is not even a county town, nor the seat of any particular interest. It is the boast of the place that it has no particular interest – not even a public school: for no reason in the world but because they like it, have so many nice people collected together in those pretty houses in Grange Lane – which is, of course, a very much higher tribute to the town than if any special inducement had led them there. But in every community some centre of life is necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Tauchnitz Edition, Vol. 1 of 2: Vol; 1448, Manual of English Literature Language The reader will do well to keep in mind, or under his eye, the four following Schemes, or Synoptical Views, according to which the history of the English Language in its entire extent may be methodized: - 1. Original, Pure, Simple, or First English (commonly called Saxon, or Anglo-Saxon); Synthetic, or Inflectional, in its Grammar, and Homogeneous in its Vocabulary; 2. Broken, or Second English (commonly called Semi-Saxon), - from soon after the middle of the eleventh century to about the middle of the thirteenth - when its ancient Grammatical System had been destroyed, and it had been converted from an Inflectional into a Non-Inflectional and Analytic language, by the first action upon it of the Norman Conquest; 3. Mixed, or Compound, or Composite, or Third English, - since the middle of the thirteenth century - about which date its Vocabulary also began to be changed by the combination of its original Gothic with a French (Romance or Neo-Latin) element, under the second action upon it of the Norman Conquest. Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1 of 2: Tauchnitz Edition, Memories and Studies of War and Peace Here you and I are, said Skobelefi' with a laugh, like Uriah the Hittite, right in the forefront of the battle; and how strange it is that quiet stay-at-home folk all over the world, who take their morning papers just as they do their breakfasts, know ever so much more about this war as a whole than we fellows do, who are actually listening to the whistle of the bullets and the crash of the shells! Excerpt from The Bell of St. Paul's, Vol. 1 of 2 The lodgers, then, being such as these, came to the bare room because it was cheap and warm. Here there was every night a great fire built up - one that would last from midnight until six in the morning: they had, therefore, warmth. A jet of gas was also burning all night, so that the people had light. The lodgers dropped in one after the other and lay down; soon they grew warm: perhaps they were hungry - well, no great matter, better a hundred nights without supper than one in the cold. The air of the room presently became so foul that it might have reminded the historical student (if any were present) of N ewgate, Ludgate, or the Compter in the old days. They cared nothing for the foul air they were warm. The walls streamed: the floor was hard: the place was crammed: their companions were as wretched as themselves: - but they were warm. In the morning they would have to get up and go out and face the cold again: meantime, they were warm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1 of 2: Vol; 841; The Constable De Bourbon On a fine day, in the early part of June, 1523, a splendid cavalcade, consisting of three hundred well-mounted gentlemen, habited in velvet, and each having a massive gold chain round his neck, entered the Forest of Fontainebleau from the side of Nemours, and proceeded along an avenue bordered by noble trees towards the palace. For the most part, . the persons composing this brilliant troop were young and handsome cavaliers, whose looks and haughty bearing proclaimed their high birth, but there were some veterans among them, whose bronzed visages and martial deportment showed that they had served in many a hard campaign. Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 1 of 2: My Lord and My Lady "You really think he will?" "I feel quite sure of it." "And what shall you say?" "Mamma!!!" There is infinite expression in the intonation of that single word. It implies, "Can you doubt me? Am I in possession of my senses? Is there any answer possible but one?" The mother gazes at her lovely daughter with a look of fondest affection; of deepest admiration. "Of course, my darling. But," - with faint hesitation - "there is just this to think of - might you not do better?" The girl shakes her head. It is a beautifully shaped little head, which genius has forborne to mar by any bumps or excrescences: she has not even indicated the self-esteem that Dorothea St. George has so large a share of. Excerpt from Collection of British Authors, Vol. 2 of 2: Tauchnitz Edition Miss Berry and Elsie were the last of the party to reach the entrance to the tent, towards which Cecil led the way. Many of the guests had already entered, and were taking their seats at the long tables; others stood in groups round the door. "Stay here," whispered Cecil to Elsie, "till I have taken Mrs. Lutridge and the rest of the Oldbury people in. I will come back for you and Miss Berry. You are to sit near us. We want you to hear the speeches. Don't stir till I come back." The sun was shining full in Elsie's face, and in the hurry of starting in the morning she had forgotten her parasol. She put up her hand, as Cecil left her, to shade her eyes, and when the glare left them she perceived that the tall, grey-haired man, whom Steenie had pointed out as Gilbert Neale, was standing at a little distance from her looking at her intently. He seemed to have broken off a conversation suddenly to stare at her, for a lady leaning on his arm looked up into his face with evident surprise. Excerpt from Evelyn Innes, Vol. 2 of 2 The music-room had seemed haunted with Owen's voice, and yesterday she had asked Ulick to walk with her in the lanes so that she might escape from it. But to-day half-pleased, half-perplexed by her own perversity, she could not resist taking him to the picture gallery - she wanted to show him "The Colonnade." The picture was merged in shadow, and no longer the picture she remembered; but when the sun shone, all the rows quickened with amorous intrigue, and the little lady held out her striped skirt (she had lost none of her bland delight), and the gentleman who advanced to meet her bowed with the mock humility of yore, and the beautiful perspectives of the colonnade floated into the hush of the trees, and the fountain warbled. For a reason which eluded her, she was anxious to know how this picture would strike Ulick, and she tried to draw from him his ideas concerning it.
