This book describes how distinctive socio-political commitments and cultural practices developed upon the internet in the later 20th and early 21st century and considers what lies ahead in those terms. Five decades after the internet’s technological structure began to be erected, and three decades after engagement with it started burgeoning, an active and global collective formation has grown upon it. This collective formation is dubbed the ‘Internet Polity’ here and is distinguishable from, and yet embedded within, real-world collectives. Despite divergences and conflicts, its organization is based on certain shared principles and its culture characterized by distinctive discursive practices. This book examines how the Internet Polity developed until 2010, in terms of the technological and cultural features that have supported it. Accordingly, the Internet Polity’s emerging prospects are considered. Topics and features: !-- [if !supportLists]--Gives an original framework for understanding the global collective grounded on the internet as a social space !-- [if !supportLists]--Presents a history of the technological basis and communication features of this collective, from the beginnings to 2010 !-- [if !supportLists]--Offers an interdisciplinary perspective that cuts across most disciplines of the humanities and social sciences !-- [if !supportLists]--Describes the histories of and debates surrounding popular terms like ‘cyberspace,’ ‘information superhighway,’ ‘Internet of Things,’ ‘hacker,’ etc. This wide-ranging and original book is for researchers, graduate students, professionals and informed readers who are interested in information technology and political culture, digital humanities, sociolinguistics and communication studies, history of the internet, contemporary social organization and political philosophy.

The Routledge Companion to Global Comparative Literature is a collection of papers by influential scholars who are engaged in comparative literary studies and addresses a central and highly important question about the discipline: if Eurocentrism has been integral to comparative literature, and if the world we live in is undergoing radical changes, then how can, or should, the discipline change to overcome this problem, of the discipline as well as of literary history, to accommodate non-Western traditions? Addressing this significant matter and taking different approaches in response to the state of the discipline, the papers in this volume offer diverse ways of overcoming Eurocentrism: the role of institutions and the changes they need to undergo; possible ways of practicing a truly global comparative literature; the history of the discipline outside Europe; premodern histories of ideas and the non-European origins of modernity; translation, orientalism and area studies; publishing and literary circulation; and modern technologies and their impact on literary dissemination and the discipline. This collection assesses comparative literature at a timely historical moment and will broaden the field by addressing the students and scholars of comparative literary studies all over the world with significant hints for more inclusive histories of world literature.

This title investigates China’s network society, both its online cyber society and offline real world society, by analyzing the trends and social foundations of society as network and the social challenges it poses, as well as structural changes in social space and social interaction. The first part of the book examines how network society in China forms and develops, analyzing the challenges and structural changes it poses. The author studies network power and uncertainties that lies in the supply, flow, and reception of a massive amount of information, revealing how this influences the government's administrative power as well as governance measures to stabilize social cohesion. The second part first discusses the social restructuring and characteristics of network social space in China. Based on case studies of several momentous social events, the spatial change characterized by an integration of absence and presence space and its influence on social interaction and experience is elucidated, including active absence interaction, mediated experience, spatial representation, and social identities of network aggregation. The third edition of Token Economy is not just an update; it is a reworking of a foundational book that has helped thousands make sense of how Bitcoin and other blockchain networks—like Ethereum or Solana—are reshaping our digital, financial, and political systems. The book serves as an excellent primer for understanding the key aspects of the technological infrastructure, as well as the decentralized applications built on top of it—from DeFi to various token types and decentralized organizations. It also explains the difference between DeFi, CeFi and TradFi, why blockchain networks can be considered the backbone of Web3, and the increasing role of AI. This edition adds many practical use cases, blending history, systems theory, and real-world use cases to demystify everything from Bitcoin to Tokens and DAOs. It explains how blockchain architecture, token design, and incentive mechanisms intersect with regulation, politics, and economics. You’ll learn how crypto rewrites money, what stablecoins actually do, how DAOs govern digital communities, and why many token ecosystems fail — not because of code, but because of incentives and governance. If you’re learning, building, investing, teaching, or regulating in Web3, this book offers critical clarity in a field full of jargon. As a longtime voice of clarity in the crypto world, the author Shermin Voshmgir weaves together historical analysis, technical insight, and interdisciplinary critique in a way that makes complex systems both legible and accessible. The third edition includes many more use cases than previous editions and reflects a maturing industry — one where many early promises of decentralization have collided with the realities of centralization, custody risk, regulatory capture, and broken incentive design. While many books on crypto focus on trading or superficial overviews, the book remains rooted in systems thinking and long-term relevance. What This Book Offers * A holistic framework for understanding Web3 infrastructure, including blockchain architectures, consensus mechanisms, privacy, scalability, and the economics of decentralization. * A critical exploration of money and tokenization, offering both historical context and future scenarios. It asks hard questions about whether cryptocurrencies and stablecoins can replace fiat money, and explains how financial literacy remains the first line of defense against fraud and hype. * A grounded analysis of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and purpose-driven tokens, using real-world case studies of protocols like Bitcoin, Helium, Ocean Protocol, and MakerDAO. * A design thinking framework for evaluating token incentives, governance structures, and stakeholder dynamics — bridging political science, economics, cybernetics, and complex systems theory. Whether you're a builder, policymaker, regulator, academic, investor, or simply crypto-curious, Token Economy will help you: * Understand the difference between hype and real infrastructure * Explore the incentives and governance dynamics embedded in every protocol * Make better decisions around investing, building, or regulating digital assets * Bridge the gap between idealism and realism in Web3

This book presents pioneering research that is designed to show, from a qualitative and ethnographic perspective, how new information and communication technologies, as applied to the school system and to local governance initiatives, merely reproduce traditional pedagogical approaches and the dominant forms by which power is exercised at the local level. The studies thus constitute points of departure for further thinking about the need to promote an Internet culture based on the social application of a OC right to communication and cultureOCO and an OC Internet right, OCO that will permit the establishment of true citizen participation and free access to knowledge, with due regard to personal and individual rights such as those of privacy and intimacy."

This book explores software's pivotal role as the code that powers computers, mobile devices, the Internet, and social media. Creating conditions for the ongoing development and use of software, including the Internet as a communications infrastructure, is one of the most compelling issues of our time. Free software is based upon open source code, developed in peer communities as well as corporate settings, challenging the dominance of proprietary software firms and promoting the digital commons. Drawing upon key cases and interviews with free software proponents based in Europe, Brazil and the U.S., the book explores pathways toward creating the digital commons and examines contemporary political struggles over free software, privacy and civil liberties on the Internet that are vital for the commons' continued development.
