Con saggi di Micaela Antola, Alberta Bedocchi, Valentina Fiore, Valentina Frascarolo, Leo Lecci, Lauro Magnani, Giacomo Montanari, Raffaella Morselli, Sara Rulli, Daniele Sanguineti, Roberto Santamaria, Andrea Spiriti, Laura Stagno Porre l'attenzione sui termini spazio e collezionismo è sembrato particolarmente stimolante alla luce degli studi che nell'ultimo trentennio hanno legittimato il consolidarsi di una accezione locale – pur nel quadro di una koiné internazionale, cosí consono a una classe di potere “europea” – del termine barocco applicato alla cultura artistica e alla qualità di vita dell'aristocrazia dominante nella Repubblica di Genova. Proprio la ricchezza con la quale i due termini si sono venuti a configurare nella cultura e nella socialità di uomini e donne nei secoli del barocco spinge a considerare in piena libertà, senza vincoli di sudditanza a tradizionali consuetudini accademiche, la categoria di spazio e le modalità di collezionismo, tradotte anzitutto in senso antropologico, come “circostanza” del vivere di quei personaggi. Lo spazio del collezionismo quindi dovrebbe in prima istanza configurarsi come spazio culturale del collezionista e la tessitura della collezione come prova visiva, oggi, di una potenzialità di lettura della realtà, allora. Questo primo volume di studi collettaneo, unito al secondo monografico, raccoglie i risultati del gruppo di lavoro attivo intorno al progetto finanziato dal Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca “Collezionismo e spazi del collezionismo a Genova nel XVII e nel XVIII secolo: unità e rapporti nella dimora aristocratica tra architettura, apparati decorativi, scelte collezionistiche e di committenza” e riprende gli spunti scaturiti dal confronto con altri ricercatori in occasione della giornata di studio conclusiva del progetto, tenutasi a Genova nel settembre del 2012.

This book explains how Genoese entrepreneurs transformed the structures of global trade during the second half of the seventeenth century. The author reconstructs the business network built by the Genoese merchant Domenico Grillo between the 1650s and the 1680s. Grillo’s business interests stretched from the Mediterranean to Pacific South America, traversing and joining the Spanish, Dutch, and English Atlantics. He and his associates created a new business model that was to be emulated by Dutch, French, and English traders in subsequent decades: the monopolistic asientos for the exploitation of the trans-imperial and intra-American slave trade to Spanish America. Offering a connected history of capitalism across trans-continental geographies and different empires, this book challenges established views of a period which has traditionally been interrogated from a northern European mercantile perspective. Cutting across the histories of the slave trade in the Atlantic world, early modern capitalism, and early modern empire, this study has much to offer to students and scholars interested in the agents, economic practices, and geographies of trade that do not easily fit into and therefore disrupt the traditional narratives of the Rise of the West. Genoa completed its transformation from a faded maritime power into a thriving banking center for Europe in the seventeenth century. Nel volume, nato da un progetto di ricerca sostenuto dal Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca, che ha coinvolto studiosi di diversa formazione – storici, archeologi, storici dell'arte, architetti, antropologi, linguisti –, per la prima volta si affronta in modo sistematico il variegato mondo del collezionismo in Calabria, argomento finora in gran parte negletto dalla storiografia. Lo studio del collezionismo è considerato non come mera ricostruzione di un insieme o puntuale riscontro dei passaggi di proprietà delle opere d'arte, ma come fenomeno dalle molteplici implicazioni: vengono presi in esame, ad esempio, la funzione della collezione, la “politica culturale” del collezionista, le forme del mecenatismo, l'identità familiare, individuale civica e sociale che veniva rispecchiata attraverso gli oggetti posseduti. Seguendo l'impostazione che la curatrice ha già sperimentato, con importanti esiti, in altri precedenti studi, il collezionismo è stato considerato in modo innovativo per la Calabria, allargando gli orizzonti di studio alle aree con cui la regione ha avuto storicamente i più stretti legami ovvero non solo Napoli, ma anche Roma, Genova e la Spagna. La copiosa documentazione inedita, che si pubblica, ha permesso di fare luce su realtà artistiche e culturali di cui finora si era all'oscuro persino dell'esistenza. L'arco cronologico considerato, dal viceregno al periodo postunitario, permette interessanti comparazioni, in una prospettiva di “lunga durata” che ha consentito di ricostruire la trama di un tessuto in gran parte dimenticato. Evelyn Karet's in-depth study of the Antonio II Badile Album - the earliest known example of an art collection pasted onto the pages of a book - is both focused and broad in its appeal to those interested in the early modern era. The provenance of the album is traced from its assemblage to the seventeenth-century collection of Conte Lodovico Moscardo to its dismantling by the dealer Francis Matthiesen in the 1950s, establishing that the volume conserved in the Frits Lugt Collection is not an original but a replica produced by Matthiesen. Although Antonio II must be celebrated as the collector of the drawings, new paleographic analysis has identified the actual compiler of the album after Antonio?s death providing a terminus post quem in the late 1530s or early 1540s. Karet enlarges the focus from the album itself to the historic tradition of collecting drawings in northern Italy in the early modern era before Vasari, for which the album provides a new point of reference. Throughout the book, Karet discusses the Badile family, examines the individual drawings in the book, investigates the contacts between artists and humanists, their rich, diverse collections and the humanist mind-set that fostered the appreciation of drawings. She explores notable early drawing collections in northern Italy and the role of northern Italy as a center of collection in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The book concludes with two appendices: a reconstruction of the original album, including a discussion of the reconstruction process, suggestions about what the album originally looked like, and a page-by-page guide to its contents; and a detailed analysis of Francis Matthiesen's career. This book opens up new areas of inquiry into an overlooked subject.

Tra XVI e XVII secolo, l'investimento immobiliare compiuto dall'oligarchia della Repubblica di Genova assume una misura direttamente proporzionale alla ricchezza frutto della posizione egemone conquistata sulle piazze finanziarie d'Europa. Un dinamismo segnato da novità e spunti di aggiornamento, percepito e rilanciato da Pietro Paolo Rubens (1622-26), a Joseph Furttenbach (1627), sino ai viaggiatori del Grand Tour. Genoese Way of Life ha provato a trovare una strada attraverso taluni aspetti della cultura materiale e visuale della casa genovese tra Sei e Settecento, intesa come strumento d'interpolazione tra agiografia pubblica e magnificenza privata. Il ruolo giocato dall'ambiente domestico, insieme alla famiglia circondata da determinati mobili, quadri e apparati decorativi – spesso decisi in piena coerenza con le scelte sperimentate all'esterno di quelle mura, nelle cappelle e nelle chiese gentilizie – dimostrano una consapevolezza di marca continentale in linea con i brillanti e contemporanei risultati economici. Ricchezza e immagine, articolazione e identità del casato di appartenenza, caratteri autoctoni delle pratiche decorative e degli stili artistici e architettonici, modelli di acquisizione degli oggetti, attributi dell'aristocratico lifestyle, sono tutti elementi in grado d'intersecarsi, garantendo una lettura ‘altra' rispetto a quella (certo celebre ma ormai storicizzata) di Francis Haskell che, nel grande affresco dedicato a Roma e a Venezia in Età barocca, confinò l'episodio ‘Genova' nella cosiddetta «scena provinciale» dell'arte e della società italiane.
