Des années durant, d'après les informations fournies par les Indiens - dans différents points du continent - on crut que l'Eldorado était quelque part dans le territoire de l'actuelle Colombie. Ce pays acquit ainsi sa renommée. Mais le prestige de cette région cachait une réalité moins brillante, que l'or et les émeraudes qui firent la réputation de la Colombie coloniale. Son image d'opulence, en grande partie usurpée, cachait une exploitation effrénée et l'effusion du sang de ses habitants aborigènes tenus en outre dans le mépris. Cet ouvrage, fondé sur une abondante documentation manuscrite, puisée dans les archives espagnoles et colombiennes, invite à un voyage à la suite de ceux qui se lancèrent - à corps perdu - en quête du fabuleux Eldorado. En les suivant pas à pas, à travers les espaces vierges, non seulement on découvre la réalité physique d'un pays fascinant, mais on assiste également à la gestation d'une société, dont l'image était le reflet d'une nature paradoxalement accueillante et hostile à la fois. Ce voyage est indispensable pour comprendre la Colombie d'aujourd'hui, si lointaine et cependant si proche, à bien des égards, de l'Eldorado d'antan. La violence que l'on y respire, l'illégalité érigée en norme que l'on y vit, le décalage entre pays formel et pays réel que l'on y découvre, ne vont pas sans rappeler la période tourmentée, durant laquelle se façonna sa personnalité sociale et politique au XVIe siècle. Thomas Gomez, agrégé de l'Université, est maître-assistant à l'Institut d'études ibériques et latino-américaines de l'Université de Paris Sorbonne, et membre du CREDAL (Centre de recherche et de documentation sur l'Amérique latine), laboratoire 111 du CNRS. Spécialisé, depuis plus de dix ans, dans l'histoire coloniale et l'ethno-histoire de la Colombie, il a travaillé dans les archives espagnoles et colombiennes, où il a effectué plusieurs missions.
