The book investigates the multifaceted entanglements between the many pasts and presents of the Nordic medieval period and colonialism. In Aristotle’s Poetics, the well-constructed turning point, peripeteia, makes a story by unfolding its tragic – or, more broadly, literary – potential. But neither narrative nor historical turning points occur in empty spaces. Given the power of the peripety for plot-making, this volume inquires about its agency in the shaping of specific regions. Narration matters, for the constitution of events and regions alike; space matters, as a key element for the construction of plots and their dynamics. The Baltic Sea region, with its rich literary and cultural traditions and multiple overlapping layers of historical ruptures, is a particularly fruitful area for exploring transformation processes from a narratological point of view.

Today’s quality of life in the Polish countryside is intertwined with residents’ social capital resources. To describe the matter comprehensively and suggest potential trends, the authors examine in four chapters critical socioeconomic issues that have shaped selected dimensions of the rural quality of life in Poland: In addition to the description of Polish rural areas before and after accession to the European Union (1), the level and standards of living in the countryside identified in the study is presented (2). The social capital of the Polish rural population (3) and the changes in the quality of life in the Polish countryside from the perspective as perceived by local leaders are also described in detail (4).

Grönland und das nördliche Fennoskandien sind heute postkoloniale Gesellschaften. Die historischen Erfahrungen des Kolonialismus prägen alle aktuellen Debatten um Selbstbestimmung, Landrechte und Wiedergutmachung. Begegnungen zwischen Inuit und Saami und Gruppen, die nordische Sprachen benutzten, sind seit Jahrhunderten belegt. Wann wurde aus diesen Begegnungen auf Augenhöhe ein asymmetrisches, koloniales Machtverhältnis, und welche Rolle spielten vormoderne Formen von Rassismus dafür? Die vorliegende Studie diskutiert zentrale Thesen und Terminologien der bisherigen mediävistischen, postkolonialen und rassismuskritischen Forschung und wendet deren Paradigmen auf die Beispiele Grönland und Sápmi in der Periode des europäischen Mittelalters an. Daraus ergibt sich die Notwendigkeit einer Differenzierung und Anpassung derjenigen Terminologien, die vor allem in Nordamerika anhand der dortigen Verhältnisse entwickelt wurden, sowohl für die Vormoderne als auch für europäische Spezifika.

Is research on antisemitism even necessary in countries with a relatively small Jewish population? Absolutely, as this volume shows. Compared to other countries, research on antisemitism in the Nordic countries (Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) is marginalized at an institutional and staffing level, especially as far as antisemitism beyond German fascism, the Second World War, and the Holocaust is concerned. Furthermore, compared to scholarship on other prejudices and minority groups, issues concerning Jews and anti-Jewish stereotypes remain relatively underresearched in Scandinavia – even though antisemitic stereotypes have been present and flourishing in the North ever since the arrival of Christianity, and long before the arrival of the first Jewish communities. This volume aims to help bring the study of antisemitism to the fore, from the medieval period to the present day. Contributors from all the Nordic countries describe the status of as well as the challenges and desiderata for the study of antisemitism in their respective countries.

Scandinavian popular novels and films have flourished in the last thirty years. In Crime and Fantasy in Scandinavia, Andrew Nestingen argues that the growth and visibility of popular culture have been at the heart of the development of heterogeneous “publics” in Scandinavia, in opposition to the homogenizing influence of the post-World War II welfare state. In Vergil's Aeneid, the poet implies that those who have been initiated into mystery cults enjoy a blessed situation both in life and after death. This collection of essays brings new insight to the study of mystic cults in the ancient world, particularly those that flourished in Magna Graecia (essentially the area of present-day Southern Italy and Sicily).
