Excerpt from Columbia University Quarterly "Men are strangers to that with which they are continually familiar." Heraclitus, the Dark, used these words apparently to express his opinion that, while men have minds, they are not ordinarily aware of it. His opinion seems to have been the result of his observation. He saw men speak and act as if mind were a stranger to them, the sort of thing at which dogs bark. Since the barking of dogs is his figure, it is apparent that his words are not the dispassionate statement of his observation. Looked at, however, in the light of the many centuries which have followed them, they may be cited as the simple record of a fact, the fact, namely, that the mind needs repeatedly to be discovered. It is continually there, from the beginning to the end - as Heraclitus says, using Homer's word for a tale fully told - it is continually there, but it must be found. History might be written in terms of its finding, marking its discovery and loss as the crises of civilization. For such a history the case of Heraclitus himself would be typical. Excerpt from Columbia College Library: An Article Originally Publishes in the University, Quarterly, January, 1861; With Alterations and Additions The Library of Columbia College is by no means extensive, but remarkably choice, as the merest glance of an instructed eye may readily perceive. It has been repeatedly sifted and arranged, so that by donations and exchanges, few duplicates of any value, save those of the Greek and Roman classics, remain; and for a Library of its character, so far as we are informed, there is very much less inferior matter than in any similar collection of three times the extent. It now amounts to upwards of volumes, with some unbound pamphlets, after deducting some 850 volumes that have been removed to the Library of the Law School of the College. Its character is, for the most 'part, scholastic, almost strictly a College Library not a popular town Library for general circulation. Hence, it is deficient in modern and current works of entertainment, and necessarily must exclude some specialities absolutely essential to the attractiveness of a general Library.
