“Here in Combat Medic we see a bright and talented young physician transformed into a front line battlefield medic in the greatest battle of WWII, the Normandy Invasion. In this personal reflection, his heart and courage are played out with genuine humanity.” —Dianne Feinstein, United States Senator “It is with great pleasure that I learned through the office of the President of the French Republic of your nomination to the rank of Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor.” —Guy Wildenstein, President, the American Society of the French Legion of Honor “Dr. Kerner is a physician’s physician...the history of a gifted scholar, teacher, administrator, and most important of all, doctor.” —The Honorable Barbara Boxer, United States Senator “Combat Medic is a page turner... It is a miracle that I have this manuscript to read, that you lived to write it.” —Professor Barth Marshall, USF, Fromm Institute A decorated medical officer’s harrowing and insightful portrait of war on the battlefield from northern France to Germany. More than fifty years after the carnage at Normandy, Dr. John Kerner draws from his wartime journals and letters home to present a candid and insightful portrait of war. Medical units under his charge pushed through western Europe, improving on the treatment and transportation of the wounded during some of the most brutal fighting of the war. Amidst the mud and blood of combat, this decorated medical officer shares a time and place when living beyond each day was in serious question. Kerner’s account includes some of the greatest moments of World War II: the dramatic breakout of the Normandy hedgerow country, the thrilling dash across France in 1944, and the exhilarating seige of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Kerner’s achievement of saving lives, often with improvised methods and shells flying overhead, is a gripping account of man’s noble humanity in the midst of horrifying inhumanity.

Smith, responsible for saving the lives of severely wounded GIs under the worst possible conditions. The author recounts his journey of remembrance, which he took with his wife half a century later. Using a hand-drawn map from the war, Smith retraced his route with the 112th Regiment, 28th Infantry Division from Omaha Beach in Normandy to deep into Germany. Recounting his experiences on the front, Smith captures the trauma of a young man's survival in war. In the chronicle of his trip back to old battlegrounds, he illuminates his experiences with the wise perspective of age.

Medic written by Robert Joseph Franklin and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with History categories.

Lt. Gen. George S. Patton remarked that the “45th Infantry Division is one of the best, if not the best division that the American army has ever produced.” Such praise came at a steep price, for the 45th saw some of the fiercest fighting in the European campaign—from Sicily to Anzio and from southern France into Germany—and racked up one of the highest casualty rates. Through it all, medic Robert “Doc Joe” Franklin—drafted in 1942 and thrust into combat with no specific training or knowledge for treating war wounds—soldiered on, fighting as hard to keep his men alive as the enemy fought to kill them. His medical story, one of the first of World War II, is told here with simplicity, unflinching honesty, and grit. Studded with memorable vignettes—of a friend who “smells” the Germans long before they appear, the dog that acts as an artillery spotter, the lieutenant who can’t see beyond a few hundred feet—Franklin’s memoir documents the almost unbearable drama of ground gained and lives lost as well as the terrible human toll of battle on himself, his comrades, and civilians quite literally caught in the crossfire. A rare look at the fight for lives laid on the line, Medic! brings to life as never before the reality of war.

The Medic written by Leo Litwak and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-05-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Leo Litwak was a university student when he joined the Army to fight in World War II, "a na've, callow eighteen-year-old son prepared to join other soldier boys being hauled off to war." In 1944 he found himself in Belgium, in the middle of the waning European war, a medic trained to save lives but often powerless to do much more than watch life slip away. It was hard fighting that took Litwak and his rifle company into the heart of Germany at the close of the war. But Litwak learned there was more to war than fighting, more to understand than maps and ammunition. In the final months of the war, he watched the men in his company tenderly serve food at a Passover seder for a dozen brutalized Jewish women newly liberated from slavery. He watched those same men torture and execute defenseless German soldiers. He fell in love at the Moulin Rouge in a scene straight out of a Toulouse-Lautrec painting. The men in his company were dreamers, thieves, friends, killers, revolutionaries, and heroes. They were the men of their time: sometimes brave, sometimes compassionate, sometimes cruel, sometimes loving, usually scared. They were held together by loyalty, only to be scattered by the war's end. The Medic is the gritty, wise, bighearted, and unflinching account of one man's quest to find sense in war and its aftermath.

Editorial Reviews From Booklist Called to active duty late in 1943, University of California-San Francisco surgical resident Kerner went to England with the Thirty-fifth Infantry Division in May 1944. Landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day, he was involved in combat for 264 days in France, the Low Countries, and Germany. He glorifies neither himself nor the military but, describing much individual and small-group heroism, shows how hard-pressed American forces, ill-informed about the enemy, often had to throw badly trained replacements into the front lines, where they naturally suffered many casualties. Kerner frequently describes personal highlights, such as diving for cover while assisting a patient and receiving the rarely given Combat Medic Award after riding the outside of a tank blasting its way through the siege at Bastogne. Kerner based the book on his letters that their recipients saved, and thereby writes with more immediacy than mere, perhaps clouded memories might allow. Giving his account unexpected depth is his knowledge of popular piano music and of European furniture and buildings, the latter thanks to his interior decorator mother. Parker, like many other young men drafted in WWII, was transported from a simple, hard-working life in rural America in 1942 to a complex, stressful environment that would forever change his life. Nothing could have prepared him for the experiences he encountered as a combat medic and ambulance driver with the Third Army, led by Blood and Guts General George S. Patton, Jr. Parker was part of the D-Day invasion. After landing at Normandy, he spent more than ten months on the front lines, supporting the armored divisions through five major campaigns in France, Luxembourg, and Germany.
