The Spiritual Combat by Lorenzo Scupoli is a practical guide to the spiritual life, with a message centered on humility, and a goal to defeat individual passions. The author begins the process with self-evaluation and identifying our internal weaknesses. He then provides us with the methods to battle these shortcomings and guard against our own evil inclinations. In 1589, the first edition of Il combattimento spirituale (The Spiritual Combat) appeared and contained thirty-three chapters. But Scupoli continued to add to the text, and it gradually grew into the current version containing sixty-six chapters. Since its introduction, four centuries ago, approximately six hundred editions have been published globally. Scriptoria Books has transcribed this edition word for word from the original text. O combate espiritual, do Padre Lorenzo Scupoli, era lido por São Francisco de Sales, doutor da Igreja, que foi guia seguro de Dom Bosco na Obra Salesiana, e que muito recomendava a leitura dessa obra clássica de espiritualidade. É um livro para se busca a santidade. O autor mostra que não bastam os exercícios de piedade: orações, missas, penitências, comunhões, etc., que, embora necessários são apenas "meios" para se atingir a perfeição cristã. Ele mostra que "a santidade consiste no conhecimento da bondade e grandeza de Deus; na nossa renuncia (Lc 9,23) e no conhecimento da inclinação a toda espécie de mal; do amor por Deus e submissão não só a Ele, mas a toda a criatura por causa dEle; da renuncia total à nossa vontade, da total resignação à Providência e do fazer tudo pela glória de Deus e pelo puro desejo de agradá-lo. Quem aspira à perfeição da santidade, deve agir com "violência" contra si mesmo. Mas o autor garante "que, sendo esta guerra a mais difícil de todas (já que nós mesmo é que somos combatidos), também a vitória é a mais agradável a Deus e a mais gloriosa ao vencedor".
