This book constitutes the proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization, IPCO 2011, held in New York, USA in June 2011. The 33 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 110 submissions. The conference is a forum for researchers and practitioners working on various aspects of integer programming and combinatorial optimization with the aim to present recent developments in theory, computation, and applications. The scope of IPCO is viewed in a broad sense, to include algorithmic and structural results in integer programming and combinatorial optimization as well as revealing computational studies and novel applications of discrete optimization to practical problems.

by Gian-Carlo Rota The subjects of mathematics, like the subjects of mankind, have finite lifespans, which the historian will record as he freezes history at one instant of time. There are the old subjects, loaded with distinctions and honors. As their problems are solved away and the applications reaped by engineers and other moneymen, ponderous treatises gather dust in library basements, awaiting the day when a generation as yet unborn will rediscover the lost paradise in awe. Then there are the middle-aged subjects. You can tell which they are by roaming the halls of Ivy League universities or the Institute for Advanced Studies. Their high priests haughtily refuse fabulous offers from eager provin cial universities while receiving special permission from the President of France to lecture in English at the College de France. Little do they know that the load of technicalities is already critical, about to crack and submerge their theorems in the dust of oblivion that once enveloped the dinosaurs. Finally, there are the young subjects-combinatorics, for instance. Wild eyed individuals gingerly pick from a mountain of intractable problems, chil dishly babbling the first words of what will soon be a new language. Child hood will end with the first Seminaire Bourbaki. It could be impossible to find a more fitting example than matroid theory of a subject now in its infancy. The telltale signs, for an unfailing diagnosis, are the abundance of deep theorems, going together with a paucity of theories.

The object of this book is to provide an account of the results and methods used in combinatorial theories: Graph Theory, Matching Theory, Hamiltonian Problems, Hypergraph Theory, Designs, Steiner Systems, Latin Squares, Coding Matroids, Complexity Theory. In publishing this volume, the editors do not intend to discuss all the classical open problems in combinatorics for which an algebraic approach turns out to be useful. The work is a selection which is intended for specialists, as well as for graduate students who may also be interested in survey papers. The work features a special section which contains a list of unsolved problems proposed by the participants.

The 16 papers reflect some of the breakthroughs over the past dozen years in understanding whether or not logical inferences can be made in certain situations and what resources are necessary to make such inferences, questions that play a large role in computer science and artificial intelligence. They discuss such aspects as lower bounds in proof complexity, witnessing theorems and proof systems for feasible arithmetic, algebraic and combinatorial proof systems, and the relationship between proof complexity and Boolean circuit complexity. Over the last several years, there has been a significant increase in compu tational combinatorics. The most widely reported results were, of course, the proof of the Four Color Theorem and the proof that there is no projective plane of parameter 10. Although the computer was essential in both proofs, the only reason for this was the fact that life is short. The computations involved were not different in kind from those which have been done by human brains without electronic assistance; they were just longer. Another important fact to notice is that both problems were theoretical, pure mathematical ones. The pursuit of the Four-Color Theorem has led to the development of whole branches of graph theory. The plane of parameter 10 is not an isolated case; its nonexistence is the first (and so far, the only) coun terexample to the conjecture that the Bruck-Chowla-Ryser conditions were necessary and sufficient for the existence of a symmetric balanced incomplete block design; the study of this problem has also led to a number of theoretical advances, including investigation of the relationship between codes and designs.

In 1992, when Paul Erdos was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by Charles University in Prague, a small conference was held, bringing together a distin guished group of researchers with interests spanning a variety of fields related to Erdos' own work. At that gathering, the idea occurred to several of us that it might be quite appropriate at this point in Erdos' career to solicit a col lection of articles illustrating various aspects of Erdos' mathematical life and work. The response to our solicitation was immediate and overwhelming, and these volumes are the result. Regarding the organization, we found it convenient to arrange the papers into six chapters, each mirroring Erdos' holistic approach to mathematics. Our goal was not merely a (random) collection of papers but rather a thor oughly edited volume composed in large part by articles explicitly solicited to illustrate interesting aspects of Erdos and his life and work. Each chap ter includes an introduction which often presents a sample of related Erdos' problems "in his own words". All these (sometimes lengthy) introductions were written jointly by editors. We wish to thank the nearly 70 contributors for their outstanding efforts (and their patience). In particular, we are grateful to Bela Bollobas for his extensive documentation of Paul Erdos' early years and mathematical high points (in the first part of this volume); our other authors are acknowledged in their respective chapters. We also want to thank A. Bondy, G. Hahn, I.
