Quando nel 1986, durante una serie di lezioni sui «grandi enigmi dell’evoluzione», vede proiettata una diapositiva in cui un pesce è collegato da una freccia a un «anfibio primitivo», il paleontologo specializzando Neil Shubin resta folgorato come da «un amore a prima vista». È l’innesco di una ricerca che lo porterà alla scoperta relativa al «Tiktaalik roseae» (l’«inner fish», il «pesce che è in noi») e poi all’analisi di tutte le transizioni anatomo-morfologiche più sofisticate, in primis proprio quella dai pesci agli ominidi bipedi. Alla base di tale ricerca c’è un’illuminazione aforistica attinta da Lillian Hellman – «Ovviamente nulla comincia nel momento in cui pensi tu» –, ed elevata ad audace idea-guida: le innovazioni biologiche «non insorgono mai nel corso della grande transizione a cui sono associate», ma «hanno antecedenti nel tempo profondo». Intrecciando piano storico e piano concettuale, Shubin riconduce le più recenti stazioni di questa messa a fuoco (dove paleontologia e biologia evolutiva vengono integrate da genetica e biologia dello sviluppo) ai tanti pionieri misconosciuti, visionari ed eterodossi, che le hanno anticipate, e chiarisce tutti gli snodi dialettici – a partire da quello tra «gradualismo» e «saltazionismo» nell’evoluzione – soggiacenti alla fantasmagoria di «assemblaggi» richiesti agli organismi per adattarsi a ogni ambiente. E non cessa, in questo libro spiazzante e densissimo, di alimentare una domanda cruciale, che investe il rapporto tra caso e necessità nella «scultura dei viventi»: se cioè la nostra esistenza sulla Terra sia (anche) un effetto accidentale o solo l’esito di un percorso inevitabile.
