Con questo libro, credo che Giuseppe Vitale abbia vinto la sfida.” [Franco Ferrarotti] È centrale nell'ordito narrativo la storia d'amore, che si consuma in un luogo di mare della Calabria primordiale e incontaminata della fine degli anni '40 del Novecento, tra il diciottenne Ugo, lí in villeggiatura con la famiglia, e una signora francese trentacinquenne – Cristiana – scaraventata da vicende personali drammatiche in quel recesso di terra assolata e spesso ventosa, insieme a un marito anziano e nevrotico. Tuttavia la storia serve da filo conduttore per rappresentare la vita quotidiana di una famiglia della borghesia “buona” di quel tempo, con le sue ataviche contraddizioni e però custode dei valori, sempre attuali, dell'amore per la cultura, dell'impegno sociale e politico (magari solo predicato) e dell'onestà personale. E, insieme, per narrare gli aspetti più significativi della società meridionale di quell'epoca cruciale nel suo complesso, con le sue irriducibili antinomie. Con tutto quello che poteva essere e non è stata. Con la presenza di una criminalità mafiosa di stampo rurale – sin da allora contigua (o dentro) alla “politica” e a pezzi delle istituzioni – che avrebbe generato, negli anni, quella attuale. Ma anche con l'esistenza di strati popolari sia pure marginali (i marinoti) e tuttavia portatori di valori alti, quali il rispetto della natura, la dignità della persona e la solidarietà tra compagni di vita e di destino. E con l'evocazione delle tante speranze di cambiamento, poi andate deluse, scaturite dalle “lotte contadine” (unico momento davvero “rivoluzionario”, dal secondo dopoguerra in poi, nel profondo Sud d'Italia). In definitiva, una scrittura – quella di Giuseppe Vitale – che affonda le radici nelle memorie e nel complesso humus culturale, tra luci e ombre, della sua terra d'origine, ma che sa anche scavare nell'animo umano con una sensibilità che sgomenta ed emoziona.
