This volume explores the multifarious representational strategies used by contemporary writers to textualise memory and its friction areas through literary practices. By focusing on contemporary narratives in English from 1990 to the present, the essays in the collection delve into both the treatment of memory in literature and the view of literature as a medium of memory, paying special attention to major controversies attending the representation and (re)construction of individual, cultural and collective memories in the literary narratives published during the last few decades. En el imaginario colectivo el Limbo ha devenido en una suerte de utopía, un lugar sin espacio real. Ahora bien, desde la conciencia cristiana, como territorio de la otredad, destinado a quienes deben estar “en otra parte”, puede ser leído como una heterotopía sin marcas geográficas. Siguiendo a Michel Foucault, lo concebimos como una heteretopía de desviación, en la que se ubican aquellas personas cuyos comportamientos están desviados respecto a la norma exigida. Así, el Limbo se forja como zona intermedia o fronteriza entre el cielo y el infierno. A partir de esta idea, esbozamos una obra que tuviera como eje central ese vacío legal en el que determinados hechos, obras o autoras/es viven en un permanente estado de excepción, en el que la “normalidad” se convierte en un objetivo inalcanzable, irrealizable: ni dentro ni fuera, sino en el límite. La idea era trazar una cartografía, una serie de mapas geográficos que hicieran referencias a distintas realidades relacionadas con la cultura, la literatura —narrativa, teatro, poesía—, la música y el cine, con el fin de dibujar una especie de gran Limbo. Dieciséis son los ensayos que este libro reúne, dividido en dos secciones: una perteneciente al ámbito cubano y otra al argentino. De manera especular hemos dedicado ocho textos a cada geografía, del mismo modo que hemos contemplado que el volumen mantenga un equilibrio de género: ocho ensayistas mujeres y ocho hombres, quienes nos ofrecen sus particulares miradas y nos hacen viajar por las aguas del mar Caribe hasta desembocar en las márgenes del Río de la Plata.
