This paper discusses the role of leaders in creating a command climate which produces ethical behavior evidenced by consistent and proper adherence to laws of war and rules of engagement. It explains why this topic is relevant and important for today's Army. It suggests that leadership is the single most important variable impacting unit ethical climate. Examples of failed cases demonstrate the criticality of leaders' role and the significant consequences of not understanding that role. The paper ends with some suggested means to develop an appropriate ethical climate.

The monograph begins with a separate examination of ethical and military theory. The criteria used as a basis for discussion throughout the monograph are proportionality and discrimination. These criteria affect both ethical and military theory and began with the search for limits on warfare. Next, a review of American tactical decision making doctrine demonstrates this doctrine includes ethical principles. The discussion ends with a hypothetical case study, based upon letters to the author from Gulf War participants, that illustrates the link between ethical principles and tactical decision making. Ethical principles and tactical decision making. Ethical principles are interwoven into the fabric of American tactical decision making doctrine. The conclusion shows that ethical principle is part of the foundation of American doctrine. American leaders applying the tactical decision making process to any situation also apply ethical principles. Doctrine requires consideration of ethical principles in decision making and that leaders establish a command climate that encourages ethical behavior. The implications drawn from the monograph indicate that these doctrinal requirements may not be well understood within and without the Army.

The Routledge Handbook of Military Ethics is a comprehensive reference work that addresses concerns held in common by the military services of many nations. It attempts to discern both moral dilemmas and clusters of moral principles held in common by all practitioners of this profession, regardless of nation or culture. Comprising essays by contributors drawn from the four service branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine corps) as well as civilian academics specializing in this field, this handbook discusses the relationship of "ethics" in the military setting to applied and professional ethics generally. Leading scholars and senior military practitioners from countries including the US, UK, France, China, Australia and Japan, discuss various national cultural views of the moral dimensions of military service. With reference to the responsibilities of professional orientation and education, as well as the challenges posed by recent technological developments, this handbook examines the difficulties underpinning the fundamental framework of military service. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, war theory, ethics philosophy, sociology, war and conflict studies, and security studies.

Head Strong written by Michael D. Matthews and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-05 with Psychology categories.

Psychology is the science that will determine who wins and who loses the wars of the 21st century, just as physics ultimately led the United States to victory in World War II. Changes in the world's political landscape coupled with radical advances in the technology of war will greatly alter how militaries are formed, trained, and led. Leadership under fire--and the traits and skills it requires--is also changing. Grant, Lee, Pershing, Patton--these generals would not succeed in 21st century conflicts. In Head Strong: How Psychology is Revolutionizing War, Michael D. Matthews explores the many ways that psychology will make the difference for wars yet to come, from revolutionary advances in soldier selection and training to new ways of preparing soldiers to remain resilient in the face of horror and to engineering the super-soldier of the future. These advancements will ripple out to impact on the lives of all of us, not just soldiers. Amputees will have "intelligent" life-like prosthetics that simulate the feel and function of a real limb. Those exposed to trauma will have new and more effective remedies to prevent or treat post-traumatic stress disorder. And a revolution in training--based heavily in the military's increasing reliance on immersive simulations--will radically alter how police, fire, and first-responder personnel are trained in the future. The revised and expanded edition of Head Strong includes significant advances that have occurred in military psychology since its publication in 2013. Many of the predictions made in the first edition have come true, and exciting new developments in military psychology have emerged. The revised and expanded edition updates the existing chapters with important new developments, and adds new chapters on character and human performance optimization--both topics of significant interest in today's military. Authored by a West Point military psychologist, this book is one of the first to expose us to the smarter wars, and the world around them, to come.

Williston addresses important questions such as: Has humanity entered the Anthropocene epoch? Is climate change primarily an ethical or an economic issue? Can capitalism be reformed to prevent climate catastrophe? What are the moral failings of international climate diplomacy? What are the main causes of political inaction and climate denial? Should tort law be used to sue those responsible for climate change? What are intragenerational and intergenerational justice? Is geoengineering an ethically justifiable response to climate change? Featuring case studies throughout, this textbook provides a philosophical introduction to an immensely topical issue studied by students within the fields of applied ethics, global justice, sustainability, geography, and politics.
