Not illustrated. 1845 edition. Excerpt: ... designed to disclose more fully the meaning of tV jj inJ.ovrijaav. The writer means to designate the splendour and magnificence of buildings, furniture, dress, equipage, etc., which made a great demand for articles imported by sea from foreign countries. (20) Exult over her, thou heaven, and ye saints and apostles and prophets! for God has condemned your condemnation by her. A strong antithesis, indeed, to the preceding lamentation and wailing. In that commiseration, the friends of God and the church can have no community of feeling. On the contrary, they have every reason to rejoice, that the church is freed from her most bitter and powerful enemy. If it be objected, that this exultation is contrary to the spirit of Christian love and compassion; the answer is, that neither God himself, nor any who bear his image, have any pleasure in the death of the sinner in itself considered. It is indeed altogether opposed to the spirit of benevolence, to indulge a thirst of vengeance, according to the present meaning given by us to that word. But it is not inconsistent with universal benevolence in its true and highest sense, to execute justice where there is refusal to repent, and the offer of mercy is treated with scorn. It is proper to rejoice, yea to exult, in tha deliverance of the good from the oppression of the evil; to rejoice that the purposes of divine mercy are not thwarted, but are to be fully accomplished in the salvation of the righteous. An appeal, in proof of this, may be made to every man's spontaneous feelings in a land of light and liberty. He is glad when the midnight assassin is detected and brought to justice. He is glad that honest and peaceable citizens are rendered secure in their persons and estates; and all this without...

Get back to the roots on Revelation Through the centuries since its writing, the book of Revelation has captured the fascination of the Christian church. The earliest Christians were unanimous in understanding it along a premillennial view of Jesus' second coming, but other hermeneutical approaches began to emerge in the third century. These clouded, and added complexity to, the task of explaining the book’s meaning. For most of the Christian era, consequently, many readers have viewed this last of the NT writings as though it were hopelessly embedded in an aura of deep mystery. An avalanche of interpretive literature has evidenced remarkable interest in the book’s contents, but along with the interest has come widespread bewilderment. Written especially for the informed layman, student, and scholar, this commentary seeks to clear the air. The book is interpreted according to a historical and grammatical hermeneutic and propounds a conservative, evangelical theology, but the reader will not get a narrow view on areas of disagreement. This commentary interacts with a range of major views, both evangelical and nonevangelical. It reaffirms the basic framework of eschatology espoused by ancient Christianity, but with added help from centuries of maturing thought and doctrinal progress in the Body of Christ. All exegesis and exposition in this 2-volume commentary are based on the original language of the text. Translations used are those of the author, and textual criticism and word study are included where appropriate. This in-depth commentary also includes extended excursuses on important topics of theological and historical interest.

commentary on the Book of Revelation written by St. Victorinus, Bishop of Petau, and Martyr. It is from the Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol. 7. Originally written in the latter part of the 3rd century. All his works have disappeared except the extracts from his commentaries on Genesis and the Apocalypse, if indeed these texts are really a remnant of his works, concerning which opinions differ. Do you want to know what the early Church believed about the Revelation, then this is a good example of their belief.

Not illustrated. 1845 edition. Excerpt: ... meaning, as in 6: 10. 15: 3. 16: 7, al., is common not only to the New Testament, but even to the Classics, as any good grammar will show; Mutthiae, 612. Bernhardy, p. 67. The repetition of a demonstrative pronoun, specially in relative clauses of a sentence, is not unusual in the Apocalypse; e. g. 7: 2, ois ido-&ij KViok ddixijaat etc.; 20: 8, wv o dQi&fibs avnur ws tj ififios etc. Even adverbs are sometimes repeated in like manner; as 12: 6, onov / wei 'Tonof etc.; 12: 14, orrov TQeyerai s'x etc. Other instances of the former kind, see in 3: 8. 6: 4, 8. 7: 9. 17: 9. But in this there is nothing peculiar to the Apocalypse, unless perhaps its frequency. Examples may be found in all parts of the New Testament; in the Septu-agint the usage is still more frequent, because its idiom is still more Hebraistic. But even the Classics are not strangers to the same verbosity, (if it must be so named); and such writers as Xenophon and Cicero have deemed it proper on some occasions to employ it. Proofs abundant of all this may be seen in Winer's Grammar, 22. 4. The frequency of it in the Apocalypse may be regarded as Hebraistic. Every Hebrew scholar must call to mind the well known idiom of rx, as in ft... list to whom, ni... Tiist where, etc., (see Ges. Lehrgeb. 197); and also the pleonastic suffix-pronoun which is followed by the noun to which it relates, as iVjrjT.x tfisnrn, she saw hirn--the child, Ex. 2: 6, Ges. ubi sup. 192. 2 seq. Like to this are the repetitions in question. In the Apocalypse we can hardly put them to the account of intensity, although they would seem to be appropriate for such a purpose, like our English thai-there, etc. But particularity of specification must at least be allowed to...
