Infatti il tentativo di ricostruire l' antefatto ossia il proemio di tutta 1' Opera mediante l'interpreta zione letterale del primo canto, dovrebbe esser cosa per se stessa capace di destare la massima delle attenzioni. Come cosa nuova. Per vero. Ch'io mi sappia, quell'auto fatto che deve costituire la causa determinante, per cui fu scritto tutto il poema, non venne mai logicamente e scientificamente presentato al concetto del lettore. Se io vi sia riuscito con questo tentativo, lo dir la critica robusta e positiva dello studioso, il quale per intendere il mio studio, non potr appagarsi della sola lettura di esso, nia dovr farsi altino nelle sue questioni, e a dirla dantescamente, si dovr inmu'arv nelle mie stesse persua sioni, finch rimane a discutere sul mio stesso terreno.
