In proton beam therapy, knowledge of the detailed beam properties is essential to ensure effective dose delivery to the patient. In clinical practice, currently used interceptive ionisation chambers require daily calibration and suffer from slow response time. This contribution presents a new non-invasive method for dose online monitoring. It is based on the silicon multi-strip sensor LHCb VELO (VErtex LOcator), developed originally for the LHCb experiment at CERN. The semi-circular detector geometry offers the possibility to measure beam intensity through halo measurements without interfering with the beam core. Results from initial tests using this monitor in the 40 MeV proton beamline at the University of Birmingham, UK are shown. Synchronised with a Faraday Cup and the RF cyclotron frequency, VELO was used as an online monitor by measuring the beam current at different dose rates in the proton beam halo and this information was used as basis for 2D and 3D beam profiles along the beamline. Experimental results demonstrate the linearity, accuracy, reproducibility and sensitivity of the VELO detector and this is discussed, in comparison with beam tracking simulations. These measurements will direct the implementation of the system at the 60 MeV proton therapy beamline at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (CCC), UK where further studies will be performed to fully exploit the potential of the VELO detector as a beam monitor for medical accelerators.

This thesis presents several studies of data collected at the LHCb detector during its first two years of operation. A detector upgrade study is first presented, using simulated events at an increased luminosity. A second study involves radiation damage to the silicon sensors of the LHCb Vertex Locator. During 2010 and 2011the silicon sensors were exposed to a range of fluences, with sensors in the mostactive regions exposed to fluences of up to approximately 45x10 12 1MeV neutron equivalent (1MeV neq). The first observation of n+-on-n sensor type inversion at the Large Hadron Collider is reported, occurring at a fluence of around (10-15)x10 12 of 1MeV neq. The effective depletion voltages of the only n+-on-p sensors in use at the Large Hadron Collider have also been studied, with decreases of around 25V observed after initial irradiation. Following this, the effective depletion voltage inn+-on-p type sensors is observed to increase at a comparable rate to type inverted n+-on-n type sensors. A reduction in the charge collection efficiency due to an unexpected effect involving the sensor readout lines is also observed. A third study relates to CP violation in neutral B-meson mixing, by the measurement of the flavour-specific asymmetry. In the Standard Model, CP violation from this source is expected to be of order 10 -4. Any measured enhancement of this would be a strong indication of new physics. The DØ collaboration has measured the flavour specific asymmetry from B0 and B0s mixing, and found it to be inconsistent with the Standard Model at a confidence level of 3.9 standard deviations, thus motivating an independent measurement from the LHCb experiment. Using the full 2011 LHCb dataset, corresponding to 1.0 fb -1 of recorded luminosity, the B0s-meson component of the flavour-specific asymmetry is measured to be afs_s = (-0.12 +/- 0.48 +/- 0.34)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the single most accurate measurement of afs_s, and is consistent with both the DØ measurement and the Standard Model prediction.

This book describes the application of a novel technology for beam instrumentation and luminosity measurement and first results on a cutting edge technology potentially to be used after the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider to higher luminosity. It presents a unique diamond-based luminometer with a detailed performance study. The online bunch-by-bunch luminosity measurements provide an invaluable feedback to the Collider for beam optimisation and for the understanding of beam dynamics. The precision of the luminosity measurement is crucial for all physics analyses. This book highlights the Van der Meer method, which is used for the calibration of the luminometers of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, and describes the estimate of systematic uncertainties, e.g. due to radiation damage of sensors and electronics and uncertainties of beam parameters. For the future high-luminosity upgrade of the collider, sapphire sensors are investigated in a test beam. It is demonstrated for the first time that sapphire sensors can be used as single particle detectors. A model for the charge transport in sapphire is developed and successfully applied.

The LHCb experiment, based at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is primarily designed to make precision measurements of the decays of heavy flavour hadrons, such as B and D mesons. This thesis is composed of two parts: the first consists of two studies of LHCb's vertex locator (VELO) and the second describes the development of methods for recording the decay D0->K-mu+nu_mu. The first VELO study involves calibration and monitoring of the gain (i.e. the detector response to input charge from particles). We propose a robust method to measure the gain response of each silicon sensor using calibration bits output by the sensors, and a method to recalibrate the gain simple enough to be followed by non-expert VELO users. This is followed by an investigation into into the prospects of using the VELO to perform particle identification using the characteristic energy deposition of each particle species (dE/dx). Finally, studies into the development of a trigger and a so-called 'stripping line' for recording D0->K-mu+nu_mu decays is presented. The relatively high cross-section for charm decays in LHCb mean this decay (with a branching fraction of 3%) occurs frequently, and the challenge of a trigger is to reduce this to a rate acceptable to write to disk. Finally, based on a sample of data from July and August 2011, the measured q 2 distribution for this decay is compared to the simple single-pole theoretical model, and the pole mass is measured to bem_pole=2.35 + 0.81 - 0.35 GeV/c 2.

This book discusses the study of double charm B decays and the first observation of B0->D0D0Kst0 decay using Run I data from the LHCb experiment. It also describes in detail the upgrade for the Run III of the LHCb tracking system and the trigger and tracking strategy for the LHCb upgrade, as well as the development and performance studies of a novel standalone tracking algorithm for the scintillating fibre tracker that will be used for the LHCb upgrade. This algorithm alone allows the LHCb upgrade physics program to achieve incredibly high sensitivity to decays containing long-lived particles as final states as well as to boost the physics capabilities for the reconstruction of low momentum particles.
