Can one reconcile a scientific, intellectual, cultural world view with a commitment to a religious way of life? Jeremy Rosen believes you can and should combine them. His goal is to educate, to present different perspectives and arguments, in the hope that his readers will be encouraged to think for themselves and choose a way of life that suits their personalities, their histories and their priorities. No two people are identical, either mentally or physically, so that choice is essential to fulfil one’s aspirations and maintain one’s integrity. This is my fourth collection of blogs and essays covering 2019 through 2021. It deals with Jewish religious and political issues, Bible, festivals, culture and ideas, and anti-Judaism. These pieces are designed to instruct and entertain without being too heavy or technical. And I am always delighted to get feedback.

What does it mean to be Jewish? Is Judaism strictly a religion, or has it become a culture? Can it have elements of both? What is the role of Judaism on the modern world's complicated stage? Jews of all backgrounds, from the orthodox to the secular, are asking these hard questions. Jeremy Rosen, a rabbi who leads a Persian Jewish community in Manhattan, is a thought leader in this constantly evolving dialogue. His new book, Commitment and Controversy: Living in Two Worlds, compiles his blog posts, essays, and papers to offer readers a comprehensive picture of his insights on modern Jewish life for the very first time. Rosen's examination of current affairs is committed to Judaism's history and tradition while pushing the envelope of dogma and doctrine. Jews of all backgrounds will find wisdom, comfort, and guidance in his eloquent yet down-to-earth words. Rosen himself understands the struggles that come with balancing modern and traditional worlds. But by embracing both commitment and controversy, he believes that we can thrive within the dynamic nature of today's international Judaism.

Rabbi Jeremy Rosen considers himself a maverick. An Orthodox Jew, Rosen is unafraid to criticize his own people and religion when he sees the need. Nor is he willing to reject aspects of culture and life beyond Judaism if it means trapping himself in a restrictive "mental ghetto." Commitment and Controversy: Living in Two Worlds is the third collection of Rosen's insightful, wide-ranging thoughts on Jewish life and its relationship with the larger world. His essays reveal a moderate who is nonetheless deeply committed to his ideals. Rosen deftly jumps from discussions on feminism and current affairs to art, history, politics, and more. While his primary goal is to celebrate Jewish life, Rosen recognizes that any culture has its limitations and failures. Firm in his belief that self-criticism is the duty of any thinking individual, he's quick to confront such failings in both Jewish leaders and Israel itself. Rosen's eclectic interests shine though in his writing. He proves being a moderate does not preclude strongly held beliefs, whether he's considering aesthetics, history, Neanderthals, or humanity's capacity for goodness. He's informative, entertaining, and always ready for civil, intelligent discourse.

In this new compilation of recent blogs, Jeremy Rosen draws on his experience as a rabbi, academic and teacher to provide insights on the issues facing life as a Jew in a western, open society, covering Jewish customs, tradition, and theology as well as history, politics and current affairs. Jeremy Rosen first started writing articles for two Jewish newspapers in the United Kingdom. Eventually, he outgrew the newspaper-column format, and he found other avenues for publishing. Now he has collected his columns and essays from 2014-2016 for readers' enjoyment. Jeremy Rosen covers a wide variety of topics in Commitment & Controversy. He shares his thoughts on everything from whether to write God as G-d to the role academia plays in perpetuating anti-Semitism. He consults sources ranging from the Talmud to philosophical treatises to modern political works to the wise advice of his father. Jeremy Rosen focuses on the larger issues the Jewish community faces and the small choices they make every day in relation to faith and culture. His work will appeal to everyone from secular to orthodox . Commitment & Controversy was created not only for the Jewish community but for anyone of any faith or none who is interested in learning more about Jewish culture.

Other Lives written by Sonam Kachru and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-10 with Philosophy categories.

Human experience is not confined to waking life. Do experiences in dreams matter? Humans are not the only living beings who have experiences. Does nonhuman experience matter? The Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu, writing during the late fourth and early fifth centuries C.E., argues in his work The Twenty Verses that these alternative contexts ought to inform our understanding of mind and world. Vasubandhu invites readers to explore experiences in dreams and to inhabit the experiences of nonhuman beings—animals, hungry ghosts, and beings in hell. Other Lives offers a deep engagement with Vasubandhu’s account of mind in a global philosophical perspective. Sonam Kachru takes up Vasubandhu’s challenge to think with perspective-diversifying contexts, showing how his novel theory draws together action and perception, minds and worlds. Kachru pieces together the conceptual system in which Vasubandhu thought to show the deep originality of the argument. He reconstructs Vasubandhu’s ecological concept of mind, in which mindedness is meaningful only in a nexus with life and world, to explore its ongoing philosophical significance. Engaging with a vast range of classical, modern, and contemporary Asian and Western thought, Other Lives is both a groundbreaking work in Buddhist studies and a model of truly global philosophy. The book also includes an accessible new translation of The Twenty Verses, providing a fresh introduction to one of the most influential works of Buddhist thought.
