Advances in the social sciences have emerged through a variety of research methods: field-based research, laboratory and field experiments, and agent-based models. However, which research method or approach is best suited to a particular inquiry is frequently debated and discussed. Working Together examines how different methods have promoted various theoretical developments related to collective action and the commons, and demonstrates the importance of cross-fertilization involving multimethod research across traditional boundaries. The authors look at why cross-fertilization is difficult to achieve, and they show ways to overcome these challenges through collaboration. The authors provide numerous examples of collaborative, multimethod research related to collective action and the commons. They examine the pros and cons of case studies, meta-analyses, large-N field research, experiments and modeling, and empirically grounded agent-based models, and they consider how these methods contribute to research on collective action for the management of natural resources. Using their findings, the authors outline a revised theory of collective action that includes three elements: individual decision making, microsituational conditions, and features of the broader social-ecological context. Acknowledging the academic incentives that influence and constrain how research is conducted, Working Together reworks the theory of collective action and offers practical solutions for researchers and students across a spectrum of disciplines.

The book merges political ecology, collective-action theories, and institutional analysis to study how the people and forests have changed through various transitions.

"Most economists think of common property as physical-a body of water, a forest-and as bounded within geographic space. In this paper, building on work in social theory, the author argues that common property can also be social-defined within symbolic space. People can be bound by well-defined symbolic agglomerations that have characteristics similar to common property. He calls these "symbolic public goods" (SPGs) and make the case that such constructs are central to understanding collective action. He illustrates the point by contrasting how conceptions of nationalism in Indonesia and India created SPGs that resulted in very different strategies of local development ... " -- Cover verso.

Human interaction breeds conflicts. Unresolved problems provide food for social sciences in general, and especially for political science a melting pot of different branches of social sciences, including philosophy, economics, sociology, psychology, etc. Political science tries to use all of these branches of the social sciences when examining how people, as a collective, try to resolve their conflicts. The theory of collective action a particular field of research in political science is concerned with the question of how people behave and act in groups when pursuing their common goals and how collective action for a collective good can, or cannot, take place. The author of this book tried to find a field of social life where collective action problems occur frequently and do not cease easily. Thus, the author selected Hungarian residential condominiums, where people have both their private properties and share common properties and facilities. The overall management of the cond
