Excerpt from Normal Schools and Their Origin: A Paper Read at a Regular Meeting of the Worcester Society of Antiquity, June 5th, 1877 But, to Rev. Samuel R. Hall belongs the credit of being the father of normal schools in America, the first to establish on this continent a school for the Special training and prepara tion oi teachers. Schools oi this kind were ad vocated as early as 1816 by Professor Denison Olmstead while a tutor in Yale College, in an address delivered on the state of education in Connecticut, in which he endeavored to show that the great defect in our school education was the ighorance and incompetency of the teachers, and the only remedy was a seminary for their special instruction and training for the work of their profession. Other gentlemen deeply interested in the cause 01 popular educa tion, had from time to time before the establish ment of our state normal schools in 1838 made similar suggestions, and Professor Ticknor in the North American Review [or 1827 advocated the same. Excerpt from Gleanings From School-Life Experience: Or Hints to Common School Teachers, Parents and Pupils This little book had its origin in Experience. It was not, originally, written with a view of publication but for the benefit of the Author's Normal Classes. The substance of these chapters has been recently published in the form of newspaper articles for the benefit of those employed in Teaching District Schools in this vicinity. It is now republished in a more permanent form, by the solicitation of Teachers and friends, and with the hope of aiding the less experienced in the arduous and noble work of school-keeping. The Author does not aim to discuss, at length, the subjects here treated, but to present to the reader just what the title page indicates, some "Gleanings" from twenty years experience, or practical "Hints" as to the management and instruction of "Common Schools," and the duties of Teachers, Parents and Pupils. The most practical assistance to him in the task has been several years' experience of his own as a country school teacher, several years more spent in training country teachers in a County Model School, and, very recently, some experience in teaching peda gogy to a group of young students in the University, High School. This equipment has been supplemented by an examination of all the books used in the high school normal training classes Of those states that have them, and by submitting the manuscript to certain experts who know country schools and the capacities of their teachers. Excerpt from The Duties of Teachers: An Address: Delivered Before the Associate Alumni of the Merrimack Normal Institute, at Their First Annual Meeting, September 4, 1850 The unexpected degree of general interest taken in our endeavor to establish a seminary for teachers -an interest so extensively and warmly expressed, -is another theme of just congratulation to those who have at heart the advancement of education and the prosperity of schools. Nor can we omit our acknowledgments for the expression of this interest in our undertaking, whether through the cordial voice of the press, in all parts of the State, or in the more substantial form of the encouraging fact, that, within the first year of our progress, we have had among us upwards of forty individuals intending to devote themselves to the business of education, or already actually engaged in it, besides the unexpected number of students in other departments.
