This book features the design, creation and use of air raid shelters, including interviews with people who used them during the Second World War. The different types of bunkers/air raid shelters (both public and in peoples gardens) are covered and the strength and weakness of their designs discussed, using original designs and primary material. The nostalgia/social history of the book covers peoples experiences of staying in the air raid shelters. These are divided into topics, including getting to the shelters (how they reacted to the sirens or whether they just moved into the shelters, especially those in gardens, long-term), facilities, health issues, morale and safety, both real and perceived. In recent years, air raid shelters have been converted into different uses, including homes, and the book will finish with a brief chapter concerning the future and preservation of these once vital buildings.

"The aims of this book are threefold. First of all, it endeavours to present a comparative international perspective of the Shelter City phenomenon and an interpretation of the Dutch air raid protection measures. It then considers the physical and formal manifestation of Shelter City, for example through a historical reconstruction of it as realized in the Netherlands, including under the German occupying forces from 1942 to 1945. Finally, the book presents an analysis of Cold War thinking on defence against aerial threats"--Page 13.

Little, if anything, is known about Torpoint's passage through the years of World War II; in fact it is a time forgotten. This book goes some way to describe what actually did happen. It is not about one story, but about many individual stories, threaded together to record and validate one person's recollection together with others, to give a true account of the incident in question, which caused death and injuries to its civilian residents; also the fate of its servicemen who died in battle throughout the world. Due to censorship, the taking of photographs was not permitted. However, during research for the book, a few did come to light, including German Reconnaissance photos identifying Torpoint as a target and American GIs leaving on 1st June 1944 bound for the D-Day Landings - a truthful illustration of the times and incidents that did occur. This book also identifies a complete list of Torpoint's War fatalities, their courage, dedication and sense of sacrifice, which brought about their early demise. It is a chronicle of a short period in the town's history that students will learn from and that, for others, will hopefully rekindle lost family memories. "I can only congratulate Joe on a quite remarkable achievement. This book will provide a permanent insight to this and future generations of the dark days our predecessors had to endure, the contribution they made to eventual victory and the freedoms we enjoy today." Few could believe that within twenty years of the war to end all wars being won the world was once again at war. Veterans of the Great War feared going through the same thing again and, even worse, many knew that this time their children would also be involved in the fighting. What had all the sacrifice been about? Cambridgeshire, the city of Cambridge and the University of Cambridge were badly hit by the Great War with many lives lost, families ripped apart and a way of life that had changed forever. Building and economic recovery had been hindered by the Great Depression. The county was not ready to face another war nor for the problems of warfare in the air. Yet somehow the county, the city and the university all found the strength to unite against the enemy once more and ensure that Germany would never win the war. The book chronicles life on the Home Front during the Second World War, which itself reached into every home and affected every citizen, changing the life and the face of the county. It is also a timely reminder of the difficulties, hardships, restrictions and morale faced by the city as the war dragged on, and how the local community overcame the odds that were stacked against them.

Relations between France and Britain have always been uneasy and ambivelant. But in cinema, WWII changed all that for a time. Although the two countries' wartime fortunes differed, post-war both were busy reintegrating returning servicemen and prisoners of war, and accomodating the changed aspirations of women. Margaret Butler examines these subjects and more in her comparative study of the cinemas of Britain and France during and after the war. Using the concept of continuity, she shows how cinema dealt directly with ideas of belonging and alienation, inclusion and exclusion, unity and division. She also draws on contemporary debates and offers a perceptive reading of key films, to reveal the meaning and appeal of French classics like "Les Enfants du Paradis" and notable British productions like "Waterloo Road".
